How do I play Warcraft 2 online with Gog Galaxy? I want to play my brother in another state online.

Yes, and for that you need to make sure you added your cd key (which you can find in your games library on gog) in the game. (there is a prompt to do that when you start the game with the launcher).

If you want friends to play the game with I am playing always on GOG battle.net and streaming/playing every weekend there and I welcome players of any level the goal is to have fun all together and grow a little bit bigger every week ;-).

What is Battlenet. I have an account on Blizzard to play Starcraft and starcraft 2 but I don't see any online options to play Warcraft 2 on the Blizzard Battlenet. Is this battlenet your talking about different. How do I set up an account?

The fist thing you need to do is to find the serial key or "cd key" of either the game purchased on the website gog.com or obtain a old cd key from a previously purchased Warcraft 2. Do not try to find it in the pink Galaxy O icon , or you will be frustrated. Once on the gog.com website and logged in, your account name will appear in the top center of page. Scroll over your account name and a drop menu will appear. Select the Games menu on the drop menu instead of the games menu on your account page. If you selected the wrong one the background of the games menu will be teal. If you selected the correct games menu from the drop menu, the background will be white. This where people get stuck. Click on the Warcraft 2 game and then select the More drop menu located next the the Language selection and above the download button. You will find your serial key or "cd key" here. If you cannot afford to purchase the version yet, or need to borrow one for your brother who will likely only play it only once or twice, many people myself included lend their keys out to those in need.

Once you have the cd key, it is entered in the game and it still won't let me online and says I have an old version. I must take a break, but do not fret we will overcome this if it is happening to you. So i did this, i put the key in and i still get an error when i try to login to battle.net through those menus?

As admin
Reinstall game to X:\Games\Warcraft-2x\ (both GOG or GOGGalaxy ver builds)
Reinstall if you use it GOG Galaxy to X:\Games\GOG\Galaxy\ . If game installed from Galaxy - do game files verification - twice in a row at least (since current Galaxy always redowanload something and didnt tell which one files - so maybe 3rd times in a row).

First run should be by admin. Next ones as normal user. Play SP.
Relaunch launcher as admin again. Put your cd-key (from GOG store or old retail one if you have you own unique key). If anything above are not actual for you and you can skip it - do repeat this one step anyway. Relaunch launcher or keychanger.exe directly and put cd-key - as admin.

Relaunch Launcher normally and choose Classic.
If you see error for first - try again. It did randomly say about port error - but only for first time after game launch.

Make sure you have clean game version from GOG (+179 community maps into Maps\Downloaded\), no 3rd party content\fixes. Server must be Battlenet Classic - Global.
If you have old retail 2.0.2.0 - it must be old 4 Bnet servers (US+US+EU+Asia). It not possible to connect between differ versions. It possible to edit WinRegistry to make show all 5 servers (as well as war2ru\war2ru-backup). To connect to old 4 servers you need 2.0.2.0(\.1) from CD as alternate exe and disc image.
probably winregisrty entirec was changed\corrupted\empty somehow (any 'cleaners' can do that). Do verification twice - again. Or reinstall game if you use standard offline build version (setup_.exe).

war2ru unoficial server support all possible exe's.
