I was trying to set up a LAN game of some classic War2, so I pulled out some old computers from my closet and installed the game onto them. I'm using the standalone installer and I've tried it on two different machines. Both of these machines are running Windows XP.

When I launch the game, I have a window that asks me to select a version. When I select the top option, it gives me an error window that says "direct draw error" and instructs me to set my settings lower than my OS is capable of. When I select the second option (Classic) the game instantly goes to a black screen and freezes. The black screen seems to be displaying at a lower resolution than my desktop is normally, judging my the size I see when I pull up the task manager to kill the program.

GOG war2 officially doesn't support winxp, use War2Combat: http://en.war2.ru/

Try this renderer instead of GOG one: https://www.gog.com/forum/warcraft_ii_battlenet_edition/alternative_renderer_cncddraw_supports_scaling_via_shaders_xbr_hqx_linuxmacos

Then it may mean you video card or driver doesn't support opengl or d3dshaders, though CnC should handle that properly...
Try dgVoodoo. But i cant guarantee that XP\all GFX cards supported even in dgVodoo. Other proxy-dll hacks it seem that do not support.

You can create your own high res version by downloading cnc-ddraw as suggested by ilwar2, then set fullscreen=true in ddraw.ini and start the game via classic mode

I think the gog enhanced version will not load any ddraw.dll, it just ignores them, someone wrote about this somewhere, can't find it now...

Anyways the classic version seems to work fine from what i've heard
I got a DD error, so I applied compatibility XP s2 and Run as Admin, cleared it up for me in Windoze 10 64!
