First off, I have to say that this game is fantastic.

Anyway, I heard the game saves your progress at some point and that you can replay levels.....but I have no idea how or when that happens.

When I reached the second world and quit, I had to start the game at the very beginning the next time I booted it up.

Anyway, when someone finally reaches the save point I'd appreciate knowing how and when it works.

Thanks!
Congratulations on the first post for this game ;)

I didn't know the game saves at all. Do you remember where you read that?
As they advertised the game as classic hardcore aracade, I expected it to not save.

It's all in the manual :)
When you complete a level, you unlock the ability to skip to the next level. When you start up the game the next time, go left instead of right to skip levels.

Edit: I forgot to mention that if you beat the game by skipping levels, you get the bad ending. There is a total of 3 endings as well as secrete alternate paths.

Heh!

The problm with digital distribution - we stopped reading manuals. They were the best thing about physical copies. Always was part of the fun of a new game, reading the manual while installing, on the bus ride home etc.
Do the levels change when you meet one of the floating crystals? Or are there halfway checkpoints also? Because I think the second one might be bugged if it's the former. It works when I play continuously, if I die I return to that point, but if I exit the game then go left the next time It only takes me to the very first blue crystal, the one that also has a power up next to it. I reach the one after that then so far die at the part with the many platforms, flower (and slightly tricky chest above it) and many enemies constantly spawning.

Hey man, the crystals are checkpoints within a given world. You'll know when you reach a new world, as you get to go to Volgarr's trophy room after each boss.

Going to the left instead of the right at the main menu isn't taking me where I left off either though. In the manual, it states that there is a way to skip past levels you have already completed, but to my knowledge it doesn't specify how. Maybe we are missing something. I don't think I'm being observant enough right now.

I just made it to world 4 and it would be nice not have to crawl all the way back up here from the beginning of the game. Though I will if thats how it has to be. The game is that good.
Okay, I feel foolish now.

I understand what is meant by going to the left hand side of the screen to skip worlds.

When you start at the crystal in the first level, you can go to the left of the crystal and walk off screen into World 2, assuming you have reached it. In World 2, you can walk left of the crystal off the screen into World 3 if you have unlocked it. And so on. So, left at the title screen and then left behind the crystal to go to each successive World.
Hey, thanks for the discovery. That's sort of unintuitive, lol. So, going to the left of the start area takes you to the next crystal, where you have to once again go to the left to be taken to the next one, and so on up to the last part you were. Got it.

Also I just passed the first boss, it was pretty awesome and the next level is quite different!

I also killed the first boss recently. It isn't very hard with some practise. Now I can play the first stage and defeat the first boss with no problems.

That's the special thing with Volgarr: Every level is different. So you can't beat every level with the same tactics. ;)
Yeah but when you first go through stuff you wanna pull your hair out and whine the checkpoints are too far apart :P
They actually give you a hint that going to the left skips to the place where you finished last.

That's a really cute way to "skip" levels. It's not so much skipping as having opened up a shortcut. It's a 2D soulsgame in disguise :D
