I hear this game has a hard time running on the newest machines. Does GoG deal with that problem, or would I have to unnoficially patch it?

Runs fine on my (fairly new) machine. I think you might be confused with this game's sequel, which needs an unofficial patch to fix most bugs.

DO NOT use the 1.2 Redemption patch, it will bug your game and you'll be forced to reinstall. It was meant to improve online play (it didn't) and it's not at all compatible with the sp game. I believe the GOG version comes patched with v1.1. 1.2 was fan-made and not by Nihilistic.
