Yes. Also they have updated to 11.1 in the meantime which is the last stable final patch version :)!

Also sorry for the questions. Do I have to run the unofficial patch through the launcher that's in the files? Or can I just hit play on gog and start gaming?

Hitting "play" on GOG Galaxy will launch the game with the unofficial patch it came with. 11.1 if you're updated to the latest version available through GOG.

For some reason, yes, the unofficial patch is active, but without the plus, i.e. there is no additional content. I had to download the unofficial patch and select the plus version when installing it.

I may be wrong here, not having played it myself, but my impression is that the basic version of the unofficial patch only corrects existing bugs, wanting to give you as close to an original game experience as possible. It's the plus version of the patch that has gone out of its way to try to restore the lost content, as well as add features that intend to reduce some tedious or difficult aspects of the game for those who find it so.

This is correct, and trhe reason why GoG offers the game with the base patch preinstalled, but not the plus one.

In fact, I believe developer wesp encourages all new players to the game to play through on the basic patch first (i.e. vanilla, of sorts) before trying the plus version

Indeed I do. Only when replaying with the plus patch you can judge how unfinished the original game was released and how much content the plus patch restores.

I'd just like to point out that the plus patch doesnt make combat any easier, quite on the contrary.

And it adds at least one opponent that a total PITA, especially if you try them early, which is when the weapon they drop is actually still an upgrade.
