There does not seem to be a pause menu, how do you quit the game without a ctrl-alt-del ?

Are you sure your Escape key isn't broken? If not, I'd double check to make sure it's bound correctly in the config file.

Mine died too; I'm crying over spillt milk! :) I really spilled milk on my key board! Well, it could have been worse; at least it wasn't beer. Then I would have been crying.
