Having a bit of a problem here.

At some parts in the game, you get a counter to show you the time a door stays open. Mostly these are easy feats, the harder ones are optional, and I mostly thought that my inability to do some of these are connected to using a keyboard or lack of reflexes as an 'aging gamer'.

But I am now (or was) at a part of the game where escaping a dungeon before the next save point requires you to do such a 'time trial'. It doesn't work. However perfect I do this five-second thing, the door slams in my face, and that's just the first hurdle of several in that room. I went online to watch a walkthrough, and somehow that guy's counter seems to be slowed down considerably. The man even has excess time to spare! This is so weird. :( :(

Motivation's pretty down as that part came immediately after a really hard boss, which I fought a dozen times at least.

Anyone with a similar experience?
I also realized some people have extra time after looking at some YouTube videos and I never found out how.

What you could do is make sure your Skill Cancel/Dash is recharged and use an item that adds more and any abilities that might help (like the ice block to reach higher).

Could you take a screenshot at the start of the counter and one at the door you need to enter?

Not right now, but eventually (although I'm more likely to photograph a youtube video).

There actually ARE items which extend these counters? Which ones??
Judicator Rainment gives 1+ Skill Cancel and I received 3 passive that stay permanent. It's possible you can gain more but that would likely be late game.

I would suggest asking at Steam Discussions regarding how it's possible to increase the counter time.
I haven't gotten far yet (only in the gardens). But so far using the skill to dash is what has gotten me through doors, including the one after the boss in the frozen part *shudder*
Just an update on this. I actually started the game anew to catch me a few more skill cancels for this part...

...and didn't need them. I mastered that part on the first attempt, which was completely surreal.

Then again, I discovered the 20 level cap a few hours later and that somehow was a demotivational strike that made me stop playing immediately. :( :(

Then you must be pretty close to endgame.

At level 20 I found the last battle a little bit too easy, but the secret optional bosses are quite challenging still.

I'm not. I felt seriously underpowered in the first battles, so I farmed a bit. The level cap hit me just when I thought the character was going somewhere. ;)

Ah well, it's an OK game in any case.

If you're still not doing enough damage to bosses, then it's time to look around for some armors and items to improve your weapons. Believe me, bosses get much more easier once you've got level 20 and a few more items.
