Is it actually possible to consistently turn enough of a profit to continue playing the game in its current state? I love the concept and the stories, but I find the mechanics very frustrating.

I have started several games with different backgrounds, perks, companions etc. and always end up killed by my crew because I just can't get the math to work. It takes at least 1.5.0 per day for upkeep and supplies, and usually 5 days between towns, so you need to make a minimum 7.5.0 of profit per town. I've tried faction jobs, trading, passengers, in various combinations and I inevitably run the comitatus into the ground after not too long.

Has anybody managed to achieve at least break-even over more than a half-dozen legs of a journey? Or am I just not cut out for the mercantile life?

Hey @verdigris451,
thanks for joining our community and supporting the development of Vagrus with your purchase.

The first question: are you playing with the latest patch 0.5.14? If so, you should be able to stay afloat even if it is not too easy. It sounds like you tried a number of ways so we would suggest joining our discord server where many veteran players are happy to help with detailed tips and hints (like trade routes, etc.)

Few suggestions of the bat:
- Save often.
- Do not try to go big too early. Growing your crew slowly, even sending away people when you do not need them is the way to go.
- Start with Faction trade tasks and complement them with passengers/quests. They provide a reliable profit base that can be built upon. As you gain good standing with Faction they provide market discounts from which point 'independent' trading starts to become feasible as well.
- Stick to known trade routes at the beginning.
- Once you found your footing visit the Dragon Lands where many of the trade goods come from (and hence cheaper).
Hope this helps and as said feel free to hit us up on our discord for more.

Again, depending on your particular challenges these may not be applicable to you so suggest joining our discord for more.

Thanks, cheers,
The Lost Pilgrims Team

I don't know what version I'm on, but you can usually check to see what things sell for, what their highest and lowest selling/buying prices that you've encountered. When I was running my first "Let's just screw around" game, I was able to turn a profit just by wandering between three major areas. You can also take jobs from factions that improve your rating with them and give you a tidy sum. Basically, you can play this like a space sim, only without the space.

Then I fought some giant ants and they killed me. Oh well. Still learning how to recruit characters and how to fight well.
Thanks Sztaszov, this helped. I was too eager to get out exploring.

I was a bit behind so I got the newest version. Then I ran a bunch of "milk runs" between Tor'Zag and Arken and built up a good purse before heading out farther. I have now played over 200 game days and explored a lot more.

I really like the quantity and quality of storytelling, it reminds me a bit of the old Spiderweb RPGs like Exile/Avernum.

Thanks!
