Sometimes I revive earlier created characters for playing, but now I came across a problem with the Carpenters Guild reputation. I need a level of 4 to set up the Yrg stables in Avernum (at least I never came across another option up to now), but when I revive a character that dates back to the time when Deven was still unreachable, the Carpenters Guild reputation is necessarily abysmal...

Is there any chance to recover it?
- I could find no friends or associates so there is no option for sideline harvesting.
- The opposite approach seems not to work: even the worst wilful misconduct, that is ambushing an Ratharnak comitatus, did not produce positive reputation at the Carpenters Guild (while making Ratharnak quite angry, understandably). The same applies to taking mercenary quests the have Loaders and Ratharnak opponents, I can't see any positive effect on the Carpenters Guild reputation.
- There are no quests to do for them - or did I just not find them?
- A very tiny amount sometimes is possible to get from travellers. But that is extremely rare and as it is not indicated (one can check it in the task list but only after accepting them, that's quite annoying sometimes), it's easy to miss even that chance.

Or is one stuck with a bad Carpenters reputation for all time once one was stupid enough not to take care?

Hey, in general when someone digs too deep into negative territory then there may not be a way to reverse that. Normally, once the player wins the game they might start a new playthrough to experience things from a new perspective making different choices.
With the Early Access nature of things, the initial options were limited so players may have inadvertently backed themselves into corners they did not know even existed. (Not even us, the devs, in some cases.)

It's important to mention that story progressions will always have non-faction-dependent options (unless starting on the story itself is faction specific).
In the case of the yrg propagation, the local leaders can be persuaded.
Not all such alternative choices are added yet, though, so there can be instances where a story cannot be progressed just yet but will open up with 1.0. Be assured there will always be another way.

On the matter of reputation gain through mercenary tasks targeting a given faction, we're gonna look into that as it should indeed have a cascading reputation effect. (Like gaining Carpenter repu if the target was Loaders.) Thanks for flagging.

Hope this helps,

Thanks a lot for your answer!

According the reputation matter:

I made a mistake... As I wrote, I was trying to gain reputation by attacking poor Ratharnak people but that can't work - they are not opponents or adversaries of the Carpenters. Seems that I should not try to do so complex things like reputation math when my brain is already aching...
However I was assuming that there should be a reputation bonus for attacking both, opponents as well as adversaries. But this sounds like it will only be fighting adversaries that earns reputation? I could not check up to now because I simply can't find a mercenary task that targets Sergorodites except offered by the Loarders, but that would make no sense because it would reduce my Carpenters reputation altogether instead of raising it. And the Loaders are mainly targeted by the Sergorodites what poses the same problem... the Carpenters seems to be particulary tricky, it seems. The other factions (except the churches) offer more variability in their quarrelings, as far as I can see ;-) .
