Even for this nice game there are several mods that adds new gateways, skins and so on.
There is an very old page where you can find mods, walkthroughs, Easter Eggs and guides.

http://modlink.net
edit: looks like I was wrong, the gateway mods are working. The map mod isn't though. I've only tried one, the green one, and it's not showing up.\

edit 2: The gateways I installed were from another site ( AWOL ), I just unzipped to the main directory and they worked fine.

I tried downloading a couple from Modlink and they didn't work. The instructions say to just unzip to the main directory, but it takes more work than that.

I'll use the Ice Queen gateway as an example. If you follow the install instructions the site provides, it will end up in a folder in the main Uplink directory called Ice_Queen, with "data" and "graphics" folders inside. Those are the folders that should be in main Uplink directory, the Ice_Queen folder should not exist.

Second, the text file in data/gateways required editing. The first line read:

Name, Cost, MaxCPU, MaxMem, MaxUpg, MaxSec, Bandwi, Width, Height, Description

...which did not exist in the AWOL gateways that worked out of the box. Just delete that line and the blank one underneath it, so the first line of the text file should be the name of the Gateway, in this case: The IceQueen P1200-160.

I haven't actually bought the gateway, but it does show up for purchase now, so I'm assuming it should work out okay.

Haven't looked into the map problem any further as of yet.

edit 3: It appears not all the gateways on Modlink have the problem with the text files

I remember a popular mod called Onlink that added a lot of content to the game but I can't find a damn download page, they're all shut down. It wasn't on modlink.net either. :(

Wasn't Onlink going to be a complete remake of the game with its own engine, or was that something else?

That's very likely. I just remember googling in case there were mods and then I found some forum that recommended Onlink because it's basically an expansion pack (perhaps more of an unofficial DLC). Anyway, apparently I found my old 0.05 installation. :)
I've come across a tough LAN. It's Knight Inc.'s, and has 3 locks meant to keep you out of the Mainframe, nothing more than dead ends (they're listed as "Guarded By" when you select the Main Server).

After digging through many search results, it seems that "LAN Force, Disconnect (before admin catches you)" trick is the only way to do this particular LAN.

Am I missing anything else? No other LAN has ever done this in my games (though I haven't completed many LAN jobs, either). Has anyone completed this LAN in another way?

You probably should have created a new thread for this, but whatever...

All LANs are randomly generated, so there's no way for us to know exactly how to tackle the one you have - your world is different from everyone else. We can't look at it without either your save file or screenshots.

In my experience, there should be a system somewhere that allows you to access the system "properly", i.e. without LAN Force. You may need to do a new scan after accessing certain nodes.

Whoops, yeah. I was browsing this thread, didn't mean to put the post inside it.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately ended up abandoning the mission because there seemed to be no way to do it. No connection to the Main Server actually got through no matter my access point (two of them), even wth more Scans (several), Probes (every node twice) and Spoofs (three possible systems, all spoofed twice) and Forces. That, and it seemed to become impossible to access that final lock, same thing as the Main Server, no connection happened no matter what I did.

Thanks for replying, sorry for not making it a thread of its own. I'll definitely get a screencap if I run into a similar LAN layout again. Maybe then we could all definitively know if this kind of LAN setup is possible to crack.

Did you also try to hack into all terminals available to you? You mentioned two access points, so I'm guessing you already know this, but some LANs require you to connect elsewhere to access parts of it (as in, disconnect and make a new connection to a different IP/phone number).

Nothing of note in the Terminals save the phone number for the second access point.
OnLink still seems to be around, if not actively developed at the moment.

Anyone know how playable it is?

EDIT: Okay, I actually clicked around there, and it looks like it still links back to the old Onlink-Mod.net site. Nevermind!

EDIT 2: Been reading around their forum, looks like Onlink 0.3.0 is sort-of on hiatus, and they are developing a new game called Kite....

I followed Onlink back in the days, they had nice ideas but they somewhat lost themselves along the way. Uplink had this investigation and puzzle solving aspect going for it, figuring out how the game works, how to get into systems, how to complete missions, how to delete your tracks, uncovering conspiracies, finding secrets, etc. I did not get that vibe from playing Onlink, it was mostly more of the same, except harder and involving more money grinding in order to purchase updated versions of the same softwares to overcome the same security systems.

Losing used to be fun in Uplink and part of the learning process, even late in the game, getting back in business after being arrested took about an hour if you knew what you were doing and avoided those time consuming jobs, Onlink instead involved so much money grinding thanks to the addition of forever updating security systems (you could spend all your savings to buy the latest version of a Proxy or Firewall Disable only to have it rendered useless five minutes later when the companies upgraded their security) and so many additional steps and softwares were required even for the most basic of systems and missions that a game over could easily require you five hours to catch up where you were at before you lost.

I recall that servers upgraded their security anytime you logged into them, illegally or not, meaning after three months of logging into the Uplink server or your bank account, when it would come the time to hack into them, they'd have v25.0+ security measures and what not. I recall when I attempted to get the Mole mission award, not having access to a Proxy Disable v25 software, I fired up the Proxy Killer software (a software that disable any version of a system, but takes longer) and then I went on to watch TV, it took the game an episode of South Park plus ads and then some more of in game time before the Killer softwares finally disabled the Proxy and I could finally access their server.

I thought the Uplink experience would be better improved if they instead added more storylines, more special missions, more familiar missions with new twists thrown in the mix, random events to weird you out, new conspiracies to uncover, more special servers and what not, rather than the money grinding experience it had become with the mod, I recall voicing my concern on their forums but they seemed to be more interested in making everything harder and more time consuming rather than adding more of that investigation, puzzle solving and narrative aspect, more of that magical oomph that made the original so engrossing in the first place.

The last time I went on their site/forums, there were news they were going to rewrite the whole mod from scratch (for the second time now) to improve performances and the main developer was also asking for donations to buy a third two thousand dollars macbook to code the game on because the previous two got respectively stolen and damaged in less than a year. I donated in the past but seeing the direction the mod was taking, both in term of gameplay (which was not heading in the direction I wished a mod or expansion to Uplink should go), but also in term of management (by now I knew the tell tale signs to recognize projects doomed to end on indefinite hiatus) I finally realized it was time to stop following that project and move onto something else.
