Uplink was originally released for both Windows and Linux. Is the Linux version included by GOG? If not, has anyone tried compiling the source code from developer's CD?

I don't have the GOG.com version of Uplink, but I seem to remember being able to use one of the Linux full version and then a patch in conjunction with resources files from the Windows version distributed on Steam to get a functional installation.

That particular version of Uplink requires GTK+ 1.x libraries; at the time, I used a PPA, but I don't know if that still works with modern versions of Ubuntu. I know the version of Uplink distributed in the Humble Introversion Bundle didn't – I think maybe it was statically linked against the libraries or at least they were included in the package.

If you're sane and use Arch, the GOGWiki has some instructions for installing Uplink from the AUR.

If you're not on Arch, when you figure out how to install Uplink, please add an entry on the Wiki detailing how you did it.

I go through this every couple years when I promise myself I'm going to actually finish Uplink this time. it's one of those "Not terribly difficult, but I'm too stupid to remember to keep notes on how I did it" deals.

The general gist is to install the linux demo from the website, then move the packaged material from the paid version of the game on windows into the same folders on the linux version. I keep thinking I'll get around to just setting it up as an apt package like I have good sense, but figuring that out has that's never turned out to be as intuitive as it feels like it ought to be.

Uplink has a platinum rating with wine, so it should run perfectly on linux. I installed it effortlessly on my Mac box using Wineskin, so something like playonlinux should work great if you aren't comfortable messing around with wine.
