smrtgi19: I would like to know if UT is able to play on non-gamespy servers?

Also, when I use hardware rendering of UT it hangs at a black screen for idk 1 - 5 (estimate) before going through to the main menu...? I have a nvidia card
I presume you mean UT99.
Anyway UT isn't powered by gamespy, but it used to host one of the master servers for UT but the original epic games master server is still running. There are also several other community hosted master servers if you want to add them to your UT install http://www.oldunreal.com/wiki/index.php?title=Masterserver_Guide

Which renderer are you using? you can find the DirectX 10 renderer here http://www.kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/
the opengl and DirectX 9 renderers here http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/
I had really bad slow downs at the start initially. I think I changed a sound option and it fixed it.
