Hi,
I tried to start a mutiplayer game with Unreal Gold on my wireless LAN (Behind a liveBox).
I found the Dialog Box "Start a new Multiplayer game", It‘s easy to Start I thpught.
Indeed it launched a game but my friend couldn’t "see" me nor get connected to my game.
I searched on the internet but all I found was pretty complex.
I don’t know how to forward a port, what’s That dedicated server... I’m used to direct ip connection.
I must confess that I installed the same GOG package on both pc but I don’t think it could be the trouble.
Can I have a walkthrough please?
Thanks

There is two option.

True LAN connection, when you connect two PCs directly with cable make them able to connect each other through local address (127.0.0.1, 192.168.0.101 etc., depending how you set up your local settings). Since it is a direct method you have to do nothing. It is like moving files from one drive to another basically, allowed by default. I have no much experience with routers but I guess this works with router too.

I don't know how to call this another method... virtual LAN or emulated LAN? It is when you not directly connected to the other PC. In this case you have to use the external IP address, and the host must forward a port where the client will pass through. Actually this isn't really LAN, more like a simple server-client connection.

If your friend can't connect to you with the set local address then you are not in true LAN connection. There is no way around and you have to open a port.

By the way the dedicated server is nearily the same as the in-game hosted server, just for playing there is no real difference. Someone with more knowledge about server could explain it better. You don't have to mess with dedicated server though, the in-game one is perfect for casual multiplayer.
As far as I know the Multiplayer dialog box doesn’ t allow to manually enter each players ip like in certain game.
That’s the most confusing: all network settings are like "hiddien", would it be in Unreal.ini?
Thanks
You should be able to open the console (~) and type open ipaddress
so: open 10.0.0.12 for example and press enter.

In unreal 227i there is an open location option in the multiplayer menu (not sure about the gog version).

I wish I had knew it yesterday when I had someone to play with or against. Anyway it's good to know.
By the way in Unreal the console won't show up with ~ but with TAB, it's what I came across.
I'll search some others command line.
Thank you

It's me again.
Whether I would play over internet I should create a network on Hamachi and then open <hamachiip> with the IP provided by Hamachi ?
Do you use Hamachi ?

You can use Hamachi for this, its just like connecting over lan except you use the hamachi ip such as 25.x.x.x
Make sure there isn't a firewall blocking Unreal connecting to the server.
This would be a bit easier then trying to connect over the internet directly as you shouldn't need to worry about port forwarding to get it working.

i'll try as soon as I find a distant PC to connect to. Actually I was thinking that you …
Whatever, I must try.
Is the open ip command available on all game like this ?
I have Aliens VS Prdator and I would do a local Skirmish at times.
Do you think it would do it ?
Anyway thank you. Yesterday I used the trick to stunt my cousin on Unreal.
It was great

I haven't used hamachi in quite some time, timezone might be a problem to.
Many games have a similar option especially if there is a console you can access but not all games have the option or its a bit harder to find.
Not sure about AVP but looking at the forum here it looks like multiplayer isn't working for LAN.
