Unreal is one of those games that I've started playing like a billion times but never finished so now I'm finally trying to beat this damn thing. However, I noticed that something about the saving in Unreal Gold seems to be broken. I believe that it has something to do with the port of Unreal to the GUI of UT.

The menu lists like 13 or 14 save slots, however, once I finally reached level 11 (which would fill save slot 10) I encountered a certain problem - the quick save began overwriting this particular slot. My guess is that despite the changes in the GUI Unreal Gold only supports the 10 slots that were available in the original Unreal game.

I'd like to know if someone can confirm this and whether this is a known issue. Maybe someone also knows whether there exists a fix for this.
i just install Unreal Gold and the games saved into the 1st 3 slots didn't appear on relaunch . . . just started troubleshooting this

Ah. That's why I was never able to play the game to completion for the last 5 years. I had autosave turned off, and I just now observed that games do get saved in slots up to 12, but when I quit the game, all the save slots from 11 to 12 are deleted.

Based on your observation and mine, this is what I conclude. It looks like save slots from 10 and above are for autosave, and when the game quits. they are deleted except for slot 10.

I have been saving games in slots 10-12 and never quite understood why I was repeating the game levels. I usually play one session every 6 months or so, so I couldn't quite remember whether I was playing the same level or whether the progression required me to go back to certain level. Now I know I was basically re-playing the levels.

Moral of the story: Save only to top 10 slots (0 to 9).

PS: I just found that even slot 10 is erased if it's not the last saved game. So it looks like slots 10 to 12 are temporary autosaves, and slot 10 is kept only when it's the most recent save.

PS2: One last edit. The slots 10 to 12 are temporary autosaves, and if any of them happen to be the most recent save, then that one is kept, and the other two are deleted when game quits. If none of them is the most recent save, all three are deleted when game quits.

That's some fine detective work. Good job.

Too bad that it's unlikely this is ever going to get fixed. I doubt that's something GOG would address and obviously the copyright owner won't deal with this issue.
