And is it easy to get online doing death matches or do I need to install 3rd party software?

Unreal Tournament servers are still alive and you don't need 3rd party software to reach them.

Unreal Gold needs manual editing of a configuration file to reach a community-run master server since the official one is dead: https://www.oldunreal.com/wiki/index.php?title=Masterserver_Guide

Is this necessary if I installed 227i on a fresh installation?

227i apparently checks for 3 master server lists instead of the 6 from that guide. (source)

So you may not need it, but redundancy is always good.

From my observations, UT99 has more people running around than UT2004. However this could be just me and the times I'm visiting. It's not like every server has someone in there. But should you have XBrowser installed (it's an enhanced multiplayer server browser, the layout is slightly more like 2004's and it includes mod gametypes that are still popular) at what I believe is about peak time, you're looking at about what you would see for Doom if you're looking thorugh Doomseeker in an adverage day.

Do note that much of the time, those numbers in the servers are bots.
And some servers kick you off with their silly anti-cheat system. I believe I could work around it without too much trouble, but can't be arsed to..

I'am an active player of UT99 and i can say that:
1)UT99 is the most played one.
2) If u wanna find some DM servers u should play at night/late afternoon.
3)In the morning most of the servers are empty or full of bots.
4)Most of the servers run modded maps (Most of them are CTF).
OLD TIME IS MISSED!!! :(
In the other hand there is no man or woman who didn't heard about and played at least one of the UT titles. Much like in the case of Counter Strike you just have to ask others out, most probably you will be able to gather 10 players no time amongst your friends. These games have real nostalgic value which isn't just about talking like the old console games but actual playing.
