I'm taking a guess as I'm not very far in the game myself, but have you tried going back to the Great Spirits to see if they offer the option?
The Unepic Wiki indicates you need essences for spells. You could also try checking your Spellbook to see if there's an option there too.

UPDATE:
Yeah, someone on the Steam Community answered this, you need essences to use the spells. Red for Fire, Blue for Ice, etc.

Spells are powered by essences. For example, red essence is used to power fire magic.

Enemies drop essences. You can also buy essences from the chef. The chef can be found in the kitchen in one of the areas to the right of the save point. He's a vendor room rather than in the main dungeon.
There are two ways to refill magic essences.
1. Monster drops - ice magic requires blue essence, which can be farmed by killing monsters in the sewers.
2. Buy it from a shop - the cook in the lower east portion of the castle sells low level recipes and magic essences.

Edit: Ninja'd ;)

Thanks for the replies guys. I was going crazy i had tried repurchasing spellbooks, going back to the gaurdians and just never noticed that it was tied to my essences.
For fire magic, you need red essences. They drop easily from bats, red ants, red worms, generally red enemies. Get your first pet by quest (a balloon frog, very cute), activate it in areas swarming with bats and let it eat them (1 hit kill). Collect the essences, save game, load game, rinse and repeat until you have a huge load... Then blast and scorch your way through! Equipping a quarterstaff that gives a bonus to a certain element (or two) is even better, combined!

I have not progressed far, but this is easy. Also wands are nice (you find ice ones early on), but they have charges, unfortunately. They are useful though, especially against a sun-like enemy that hurls firebolts at you!

Wands are only really useful early on because the game doesn't give you enough of a supply later on.

Potions can be quite useful, especially the Ghost Form ones (I believe you need 8 skill to make these). Cast Ghost Form and enemies won't be able to hit you with physical attacks, but you can still use spells. Combine it with the Reflect Projectiles spell (late-game spell that requires 14 in a skill you don't even get until the end) and even the endgame is quite manageable on Hard++ difficulty.

By the way, if you want to go for Reflect Projectiles, I recommend saving the orb that lets you respec until you reach the point where you can buy the spell and are at least level 14. Of note, this doesn't come up until after the last real boss fight.
