Do I have to install the VGA Upgrade Patch and the Hythloth Dungeon Patch in a specific order to make sure the Hythloth patch works or does it even matter which order I install them in? Hate to be a bother, but I want to make sure as i've heard you can't beat the game without the Hythloth patch. Thanks in advance.

As far as Ultima IV being "impossible" to win without the Hythloth patch, that part is true. There is a room in the sixth level of Hythloth that contains a secret door you must open in order to advance, but on the DOS version (which is the version GOG offers) the trigger to open that door was never properly implemented. (Unfortunately, there's no way to simply avoid the room in question. It's part of a maze that you have no choice but to navigate at some point.) The "Hythloth patch" puts the trigger tile where it's supposed to be, so you can open the room and move forward.

Oddly enough, the Apple original also has this bug, but the Commodore 64 and Atari 8-bit versions do not.

You can win without the patch. The Up spell can get you past that room.

P.S. I hadn't heard there were any working versions out there. When I was looking into this I came across a report of it being busted on the C64 version (http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.computer.ultima.dragons/browse_thread/thread/1d8575b2830da403?pli=1). And when I found the same problem in the original Apple version I stopped looking. I hadn't heard anything about the Atari version.

Do you have first hand knowledge of it working?

The current fix was just what I thought was close enough. If there is an official working version I could change the fix to match it.
Just use the "Ultima Patcher", the VGA patch and all other necessary fixes are installed: http://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/ultima-patcher-1-2/
