Hello everyone !

First if there is a topic like this that already exists, please feel free to close it. But my research didn't show me any topic of this kind.

So let's get to the main topic. I want to get into the Ultima universe. I tried to play 4 since it's free but I'm having a hard time with it.

So my question is, which Ultima game is perfect for beginners ? The easiest to get into ?

Some people told me to try Ultima 7 and to stay away from 9.

What do you think ?
It's hard to say.
Personally I found U4 and U5 much easier to get into than U6 and U7. For others it's the other way around.
To play U6 I used the Dungeon Siege remake instead. So if you can't get into U5 maybe try the Dungeon Siege remake named Lazarus instead?
But U4 is the natural starting point, since it's a unique game and it's the game in which The Avatar is born.

What problems are you having with 4? The answer to that might help us figure out a good starting point for you.

Well this will sound stupid but first there was the controls. I had to check which key was doing what like every 5 seconds and also...I had no idea where to go.

Maybe I should give it another try because I really want to get into it

I think that's a good idea. I know the controls for Ultima 4 are strange by modern standards. They seem sort of clunky and arbitrary. They don't follow the same patterns that have been slowly established over the past 30 years, but if you keep playing, I think you'll get used to them.

If you don't know where to go, just talk to people you see. Talk to everyone. It will probably be helpful to write down anything they say that seems like it might be important. In the old days I kept some note cards and a pencil on my desk while I was playing, but when I tried again last year I just kept a text file on my desktop. I would switch back and forth between the game and my text file and keep notes that way.

It's been a long time since I've used some paper and pen...but a text file on the desktop seems also like a good idea. I'll try that and tell you how far I went.

Thanks for the advices guys !
I will suggest Ultima 7. Great mouse-driven controls.
