Hi,

on http://reconstruction.voyd.net/index.php?event=project&typeKeyword=fanpatch there is a patch for UW2 that supposedly improves music quality.

I tried installing it. Of course to even add the files to the game you need to edit the ISO file game.gog using something like WinISO. Annoying but doable.

But the next step is to enable "Roland" as MIDI device to take advantage of the better MIDI. The program UINSTALL.EXE always fails in the GOG release.

I know that you can edit the UW.CFG, but I do not know what to put there for Roland. Can someone help?

Thanks a lot!

In UU1, the Roland is 6 and the Soundblaster is 4.
So if UU2 uses the same values the first line should read:
6 -1 -1 -1 sound
Thanks. Tried it but it does not work, no sound.

But I understand now that probably I would actually have to have a Roland device or an emulation running on my computer, so maybe this whole thing is not for me.

You don't really need a Roland emulator for the music. The default Windows midi device will play music that is almost as good if you chose option 6 (or whatever is the correct value in UU2). Choosing the Soundblaster (4) to play music, it sounds much worse.
But to get decent sound effects you need either a real Roland or a the Roland emulator. For the emulator you'll need to get some ROMs that can't be aquired legally...
As far as I understand it, that patch won't really help. Dosbox emulates most dos sound cards, and that patch is just for people with a specific sound card to improve music performance.
OK, sorry for the late reply. I was busy AND this is a pretty complex topic that required some research.

But I have figured it all out and written an overview post about it:

Thanks for your replies.
