Need some help here. I've looked it up in the forum, and nobody else seems to be experiencing this, which leads me to believe I'm either missing something, or just out of luck.

- Using Windows 8.1 64 bits
- Ultima VIII installed at the default GOG location (C:\GOG Games\Ultima 8)
- Pentagram installed and pentagram.ini duly configured and moved to myusername\AppData\Roaming/Pentagram
- Followed Pentagram's readme instructions for the game's path (C:\GOG Games\Ultima 8)

Now, when I click on pentagram.exe, a window opens that seems to be in line with what I've specified on pentagram.ini, resolution, full screen, etc. However, other than seeing the titular pentagram's illustration and the cursor turning red, nothing else happens and there are no options for me to pick from.

Since the readme specifies you need to point out the directory in which u8.exe is found, I tried pointing to the Dosbox directory inside GOG Games, but to no avail. Help a confused fellow out, please?

Anyone...? I realize VIII isn't the most popular of the bunch, but certainly there's someone, somewhere, who has a working configuration for Pentagram who might be able to help. Pretty please...?
Try adding or removing the trailing backslash in the path you specified.

This has happened to me in Windows and in OSX and I keep forgetting what fixes it.

I'll check my config when I'm in front of a computer, and see if anything rings a bell.
Thanks for the suggestion, friend, but, unfortunately, it didn't seem to do much.

I took a screenshot of the Pentagram loading screen, in the meantime, because the output was scrolling far too fast for me to read, and, as expected, it says it can't find 'u8', so the problem is clear.

Thank you for the offer of checking your config. Hopefully you'll notice whatever obvious thing it is I'm missing.

I've only got OSX where I'm at at the moment. I can check my PC version when I'm back home. I think I've done other things like copy all the U8 files and folders into the pentagram folder, and used a relative dir like .\

I can't remember if that helped though. I've been through this same process on three different OSes, and fixed it, but I do remember it taking a little while to figure out each time.
Sure thing. Do let me know when you get the chance to check it out at home. And thanks for offering to help.
Sorry for the long delay! My wife was in surgery the other day when I posted, and I've been busy since. I had time to look at it.

So, the U8 from GOG has multiple folders for separate languages under the Ultima8 main folder (or wherever you installed it to.) All of the game files are in each language folder. So let's say you installed the GOG U8 to:

C:\Ultima8

The path in the pentagram.ini needs to be:

C:\Ultima8\English

That got it going for me.

This isn't the same issue I was thinking of above, but it works for getting GOG U8 going in Windows. You could actually move all the files/folders out of the English folder into the main one, then delete all of the language folders. That would work too. Then just point to the main folder.
Thank you so much, friend. That did the trick. Hope your wife is doing well.

For the record and benefit of anyone who might stumble onto this problem in the future, if you use GOG's default installation directory, the path you must set in the pentagram.ini is: C:\GOG Games\Ultima 8\ENGLISH
