I'm using a german keyboard (qwertz instead of qwerty). Everytime I press the z-key I get a y and reverse. This is very annoying when I mark the map and the remark contans a y or z. Therefore I would like to change the keyboardlayout to german. I edited the dosboxULTIMA1.conf (and dosboxULTIMA2.conf) with keyboardlayout=gr (I also tried [autoexec] keyb gr). The stdout.txt contains these messages

DOSBox version 0.74

CONFIG:Loading primary settings from config file C:\Apps\glib\Ultima\Ultima Underworld 1 and 2\Ultima Underworld 1\dosboxULTIMA1.conf
CONFIG:Loading additional settings from config file C:\Apps\glib\Ultima\Ultima Underworld 1 and 2\Ultima Underworld 1\dosboxULTIMA1_single.conf

DOS keyboard layout loaded with main language code GR for layout gr

but it doesn't work and have no effects. Is there a other way to change the keyboardlayout?

There are two basic ways for a program to interpret a keyboard command: the correct way (i.e. looking at the character that the pressed key represents) and the hard-coded way (using the actual key on the keyboard). I assume that Ultima Underworld uses the hard-coded approach, so it doesn't mater if your Y key is labeled Y, Z or whatever, you can't change it.

My solution to this whole QWERTY/QWERTZ mess was to simply swap the position of the Z- and Y-key on my keyboard and then set up a German QWERTY keyboard layout for my entire OS (I'm using OS X) and kiss QWERTZ goodbye for good. Every application has the keyboard shortcut for Undo be ctrl + Z (or cmd + Z on Mac), which is a horrible combo for such a frequent shortcut.

Of course you could also use the DOSBox key mapper to swap the two keys for this game only, but then you won't be able to be all elitist about having a German QWERTY keyboard.

Thank you for your quick response HiPhish. The hard-coded approach is a very good explanation for this behavior. I played Underworld twice - and created even a walkthrough, search google for sir cabirus ultima underworld walkthrough - but can't remember the trouble with the z and y key. Age is beginning to tell ;-)

I really liked your site. I just wished more of it was in English... :)

Ah, so you're the one who wrote it. It's a great walkthrough, used it myself a couple of times; I played Ultima underworld for the first time about a year ago and it was fantastic despite its age. Anyway, I have gotten so used to my German QWERTY keyboard that I never notice the Z/Y issue in DOS games, so I never think about it. It took me a few days to get used to it, but the convenience of being able to press cmd + Z so easily was totally worth it.
