So i bought the game, got it installed and running just fine. It runs really smooth, and im glad im able to play the game again, but i have issues with particles and other effects.

What im talking about is things like the Moongate at the start of the game, it just doesnt show up at all. Same thing when you're going through your house and the tutorial. When the Ankh's appear, usually there is a sort of glowing particle effect and wind wrapping around it as it appears, i do not see any of that (the ankh is there just fine).

Has anyone else run into this issue? Or have any suggestions on how to get them to show up?

Specs are:

Core 2 Quad Q9550
ATi 5850
8gb's system memory

if any more details are needed, i'll be happy to provide.

edit: added a screenshot of what i mean

Hmmm...

Are you using the default video settings? (As in the nGlide wrapper.) That may be the issue if you are. I installed the game from my original disc and it worked just fine.

I am. I'm using it just as the gog installer put it there... I will say i've been poking around in the options.ini file. i noticed an option for using glide or direct3d. when i change it to direct3d, the particles seem to work. However, the mouse cursor is quite jumpy when using it like this, its incredibly smooth when used w/ glide, but not d3d. it slows down and jerks when i use it with d3d. i cant figure out if this is something that can be fixed, or will just have to be delt with.

Im curious if anyone else who has downloaded the game through gog experienced this issue.

added: So i found an old install of U9 that i saved from an older computer. it apparently just crashes whenever i try and use d3d. the mouse issue is also apparent.

im not sure if other files could be causing the issue, but i might try moving some things around to see if anything helps.

did you just install the game from disc, w/ nothing added from gog?

From the disc, nothing from GOG, fully patched from Forgotten World: http://www.forgottenworld.de/index.php/screenshots/ultima-ix-patchs-and-forgotten-world-releases

I also used the Extended Setup Utility: http://ultima9.ultimacodex.com/the-ultima-9-extended-setup-utility/

This was all last year some time though. I was using Windows 7 and an nVidia card just as I am now. But it was a while ago and I don't have access to the disc until tomorrow to verify everything.
thats certainly a handy tool. everything works fine when i set it to use directx6.1 i think? im guessing this is the same thing i was doing, because it looks exactly the same, and my mouse is still a bit awkward at times, but i think overall i can deal with it...

i wonder if im just missing something that needs to be installed, or if this issue is exclusive to ATi video cards.

after changing a few settings w/ the utility, the mouse issue seems less apparent, so i can probably deal with it.

I also tried it after updating w/ the forgotten world files, and it doesnt help the issue on glide. I will say though, on the settings that work, the cursor and text are a bit more smoothed out, which i like.

Oh, something that might help if you're using Windows:
Go into Control Panel>Mouse>Pointer Options [tab] and make sure "Enhance pointer precision" is unchecked.
It helped some people with Underworld issues so maybe it'll help here as well.

yup I have this issue as well. also with an ati card. Pretty annoying.
I have this issue as well with Windows 7 64bit, Intel HD4000 graphics. If I switch to D3D, rather than Glide, the particles appear to work. However, rather than th jumpy mouse you are experiencing, my textures and resolution appear scaled back and blurry. The overall graphics in the Glide presentation are way better, just no particle effects in that version.
Hi,

We put up an updated installer for Ultima IX that fixes the particle effects problem under Nglide. We basically rolled back one version on Nglide. Particle effects should work properly now. Thank you for your patience guys :D
