I downloaded the Ultima III upgrade from the Exodus Project website out of curiosity to see if it could fix my major problems with the game, namely the horribly unbalanced food consumption vs. monster spawn rate. One of the instructions tells me to run a command prompt to get the patch working (probably because the game is so old it can't run it by itself).

I have never run a command prompt before and online searches have only serve to confuse me. I don't know how it functions or how to navigate the prompt and get to the U3 directory and run the patch properly. Could anyone please give me concise instructions on how the prompt functions or (better yet) how to navigate my files?

Assuming you're running Windows, you can go here and get the patcher for all GOG Ultima releases (scroll down to the miscellaneous section and grab the 1.61 version). Teaching DOS is a bit more involved, so try that and let me know if you have any problems. If so, we'll move on to DOS...

If you are running windows seven you can click on the round ball in the bottom left corner. In the bottom left is a box where it says "search programs and files"
Type in there the phrase command


An option under programs should come up listed as command prompt.

Click on it and the command prompt will come up. You would do your entries there.

Stupid question, but what exactly does the patcher do and how does it work? Do I just put it in the Ultima 3 folder? There doesn't seem to be any instructions on installation on that website.

You don't need to put it in the Ultima III folder (and I wouldn't, because it deals with all the Ultima GOG releases). Simply extract it wherever you want and then run it. The program allows you to apply many patches to the GOG releases, and you can choose between the various options. Play around with it a bit, then let me know if you're having any issues, and I'll try to help.
