Hi. Just got Ultima 9 and everything seemed to be working fine. I was just wondering what all the issues were about when just short of the water before the Gypsy, the avatar stopped walking and just glided about. It was like the model animation was frozen. The next combat was very staggered and took for ever. Turning the page of a book or closing a book now takes for ever.

After trying a bunch of things to fix to no avail, I resorted to uninstalling and reinstalling but the problem has not gone away and the issue is there from the very start. (Scary).

So I'm thinking there is some registry setting or system cache or something that has been left behind after uninstalling that is causing this issue.

Has anyone else had this issue and found a work around?

Or if anyone has played the GOG version through successfully what OS were you using?

Thanks in advance.

Okay, I realize this is a really old topic but I just ran into the exact same problem myself the other day. You can see the issue that we're talking about in this youtube video (I didn't make it, just came across it while I was searching for a fix):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9Y_wn2VCFo

My full story is I had Ultima IX installed on my laptop, and it was running fine, but I got bored and quit playing. That was some months ago, but I decided to give it another go and immediately ran into this issue. No idea what caused it. Like dvdswnn, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but to no avail. Also used CCleaner with both a regular clean and a registry clean before reinstalling, but the issue came back.

My laptop is a few years old, Intel Core 2 Duo, integrated graphics, 4 gigs of ram, nothing to shout about. Running Windows 8.

My solution was to install the game into another partition on my hard drive. This new install has worked just fine. It's possible you could just try a different directory on the same partition (I had just reinstalled to the same default location where my original install was) but since I didn't try that, I'm not sure. A different partition seems to do the trick. I'm not computer-savvy enough to figure out what causes this.
I had this problem for a bit myself once - after going bonkers trying to fix it every way I could think of, a simple system reboot seemed to fix it for me. At least, I haven't had a problem with it since, dunno if that's typical or not after having run into this problem.
Thanks for the help guys. System reboot definitely doesn't fix it. When I get some spare time I'll try the install to different partition and see if that helps.

Game plays great on Win8.1x64, btw. I really think in the future that you should post a few things about your own system, like gpu, available ram, OS, cpu and etc. You are apt to get more/better help that way. As it is, it is nigh impossible to help you given the complete lack of information your posts contain that is specific to your hardware.

I highly recommend visiting http://ultimacodex.com/ and availing yourself of the resources there--most especially the extended setup programs offered for the game (one is much better than the other, but either is much better than nothing...;)) I use the "Ultima IX Ascension Extended Setup b6 b2a.exe" setup program--much more detailed than "finalSetup.exe," but you can use either)

The slow book opening is easily remedied by editing the "streamduration" options in the options.ini file--I actually had to increase this value substantially in order to stop sound/music skipping and jumping every time I opened a book...;) Iuse streamduration=10000 and find it works perfectly for me.
Hmm. I thought the issue was so specific that it would provide enough information, and as it turns out, despite your concerns, there were two other people who had a similar if not the same problem, and both had alternate solutions I could try.

But since you asked I have a i7, 8Gb ram, Geoforce GT 660M with 2GB, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. So I don't think it's a case of struggling hardware.

And I stress again, it was running fine until just before the Gypsy. Incidentally the book was opening and closing fine before the problem.

But the real mystery to me is the fact after a complete uninstall and reinstall it does not restore to it's original state but instead the problem persists. It means that something is being left behind after the uninstall, either registry settings, some config data or something else. Maybe the graphics driver keeps track of how to run exe's or something.

I find GOGs installers are pretty good most of the time. I've only ever had two exceptions, this being one of them. I'm not entirely sure what they have done with this app but I understand they usually try to have the latest patches.

However, thanks for confirming for me that it can run on a modern OS. I just got the kids 8.1 machines so maybe I'll try it on one of those. They have similar specs to mine but with Radeons.

And thanks for the URL resource. I'll certainly look it up.

I have played every Ultima game when it was actually released except this one. It would be nice to finish this off.

What I meant was that when you have a problem it's generally always a good idea to reveal your general system specs along with the problem, that's all. That information may make a difference in the responses you get when you have a query about a game not running correctly.

Good rule of thumb for Windows7/8 x64 installations is *never* install your game to the Gog default, c:\program files (x86) (for most games), as both Win7 & 8 include write protections to the Gog default install directories that may actually interfere with the proper functioning of the game--any game. Good practice: if installing to c:\, make it inside a c:\Games folder (or named something else that suits you.) Best practice: install your games to a different drive partition whenever possible. I install all of my games to D:\, E:\ and F:\ drives exclusively. Setting up separate partitions for organizing your data is simply good practice--but installing to the Gog default of c:\program files (x86) can definitely cause a game problems.

Oh, yes, I was running U9 without difficulty on Win7x64 for a long time before moving to Win8x64 last year. The game has no problem with either OS (but as I say I did not install to the Gog default directory, either.) And yes, those URLs are invaluable for getting the most out of the game, imo.

Good luck with U9!
That try a different install location sounds like a good tip. All my other Gog games run fine save 1. I'll give that a go.
I'm having this problem myself. However I'm very computer illiterate. Is there any chance one of y'all could explain how to do one of these solutions in a way a baby could understand?
Sorry to necro a really old thread, but I'm having this problem also. I've been able to repro it on two PC's, both desktops one with an AMD video card and the other with NVidia. My laptop however (with integrated AMD) runs fine. All machines are running Win 10.

Has anyone found a way to resolve this?
