So I bought this game today, and I think I WAS near halfway complete. But then I ran into some sort of bug and now cannot launch the game at all. The problem began after visiting Mythran. After that, the screen kind of got out of whack, with images randomly appearing in patches on the screen. I continued playing until I got hold of the reagents for Vividos/the Necromancer. It then crashed and exited on its own. When I tried to launch the game again, it goes to a black screen with the message:

"Halting in file ANIMCACH.C, line 224,
Program halted by code.
_"

Has 6 hours of hard play been for nothing? :(

Can you revert to a previous save and try again, hopefully avoiding that nasty bug with a little luck on the next run through the same area of the game? It could be that bug is actually difficult, not easy to reproduce so maybe you'll be fine on a next attempt.

I know I played this game to completion when it was new and never saw this happen. So hopefully if you try a previous save you won't see it again.
Hiya, thanks for replying. I uninstalled the game and moved my saved games back into the directory and the game launched, but my other saves were also corrupted and I couldn't progress further into the game. The problem was the NPCs wouldn't talk to me. I'd double click them and they'd turn to me, but there was no dialogue. And I couldn't do anything, not even press ESC. It looks like I'll have to start the game from scratch again. I wouldn't have minded so much if I hadn't already spent almost 2 hours trying to max my stats. I think I would have managed to complete the game today if I hadn't run into this problem. Thanks anyway.

Ouch. That sucks. Sorry to hear about your troubles there. In case you are not already doing this, if playing in Vista or Win7 I'd highly recommend installing any old game including this one into a folder like C:\Games\etc rather than Program Files as there can be issues for older games writing and saving data in that protected area of Windows. Maybe you already know that but I figured I would mention it just in case. Personally to avoid problems I install all games into folders under C:\Games on my own system.
Try running the game via Pentagram http://pentagram.sourceforge.net/download.php. It's like Exult but for Ultima VIII.
