I can't get Ultima 7 to start. When I open it up, the dosbox window appears, then the screen goes black for a second and then just goes back to desktop.

There is an older thread with a user having the same problem as me, and a solution was given. I tried that solution, and it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Running Windows 7 or Vista?

There is three "traditional" fixes for the startup problems on those, all of these in order.

1. Run graphics mode setup from startup menu and configure the graphics.

2. Run the game as administrator. Also, configure the game to use compatibility mode settings of Windows XP

3. Modify dosboxULtIMA7.conf and change output=surface to output=ddraw. Also check shader= and fullresolution= lines. Note that graphics mode setup can change those values too.

Extra thing to try if nothing else works.

Uninstall the game, and then install again to some other folder than C:\Program Files, use c:\games for example.

I can't change the .conf file... It gives me a save as window instead of just saving and updating the file and then it proceeds to tell me that access is denied.
You'll need to run Notepad (or whatever it is you're using) as an administrator.
