Nirth_90: Is it possible to change hotkeys when you play via DosBox?
avatar
GoingDown: No. Only with exult
Actually, there is a way to remap the keys in DOSBox. However, it's a permanent thing so if, for example, you remap the "a" and "q" keys to each other you'll need to hit "q" to type "a" and vice versa. There isn't a ton of typing in U7 though so it may be a viable solution.

As far as Exult goes, I STRONGLY suggest using it. The current builds are very stable. There is the disappearing objects bug but, just save every so often (you get something like 96 save slots in Exult) and, you'll be fine. If you run across something that's been deleted, just quit and then, reload an earlier save. Another thing you should do is quit the game every so often to let the cache clear. That also keeps the bug from popping up and allows you to take a break (which should really be done every once in a while regardless.) :)

As for the lagging in Exult that you mentioned... I don't know. The only difference I noticed in the movement between the two; is that things are faster in DOSBox, because I haven't reduced the framerate from the 14000 GoG has as the default for U7.

About the item bug. What if items disappear that I don't have on me? Like food or a quest object that I've yet to encounter and once I reach that situation it's not there.

I may have mixed up what exactly is causing what lag. In Exult with 4FPS I have fluid movements of characters and there's hardly any lag as far as this kind of game goes, no issues that I find annoying at least. Except with the mouse, the mouse is all jerky. Very hard to explain but the fast when fullscreen option or changing the sensitivity doesn't change anything. This isn't a huge issue though, just a bit annoying.

About Exult, which version would you recommend? I downloaded 1.2 from 2004 which apparently has been reported to cause less of the bug but it hasn't as many options as the new, including the very much likeable smooth scrolling. 1.49 rc1 and 1.5.x I have as well and between the two I don't really know anything except in 1.5 they fixed the red fullscreen glitch during options.

One other option is to cheat the item into existence. I personally feel that if you've gotten to the point where an item should be and its not, then creating it is perfectly legal and shouldn't be considered cheating.

Yeah the quest item you have yet to reach is a real issue. That's why I suggest saving often and quitting once an hour or so to clear the cache.

Yeah still no lag from my end, mouse or otherwise. I've tried it fullscreen, windowed, high resolution and low. I'm not sure what's going on for you. Sorry.

Stay away from Exult 1.2 because they have fixed many bugs between that and the current releases. 1.49 rc1 and 1.5.x are very close to identical but I do suggest the most recent "nightly" build. Again, you'll have to do the save and quit workarounds and it's still possible to run into a missing item and have to backpedal a few saves so it's a risk. I personally think the risk is outweighed by the gains of the Exult engine though.

What build is that exactly and where do I download it?

Sorry, they call them snapshots. The current one is 5/31/2012 for Windows. Mac is actually a couple weeks newer but I don't know if that's due to changes or if that's just when they were able to compile it.

Oh well than I've it then, I thought the 1.5.x was the snapshot. Ah well I'm still unsure and I don't really want to ruin the game by playing some half-thoughtful way just to play it. I think it will work fine with DosBox but since they fixed other bugs in Exult not to mention real widescreen and the movement animations with smooth scrolling I can't decide. :(

Edit: That workaround by saving a lot doesn't really suit me. I will have to basically work my way through saves if an item would disappear in Exult and in case I would have used 96 saves or at least several that will take a lot of time to sort out. I think it will be ruin the experience.

As I understand it, the bug is not that some random item in your inventory will disappear and you might find out much later. It's that a whole area of the game map will be wiped of all objects (e.g. furniture, etc) and the problem will typically be preceded by a crash. You can work around this problem by just saving frequently. You may not even encounter it.

Ah, okay. So in case the game crashes I should go back one or two saves?
