first i just want to say that i can't tell you how happy i am to be able to play this game without spending hours and hours trying to create a new floppy boot disk!! what a pain in the a$$ that was. the copy i downloaded from GOG works beautifully without any frustrating compatibility issues.

i have played the game through multiple times and i can't figure out how to access the cheat menu in the gog version. can someone help me? i am sorry to say that i will need serious hand-holding as i am not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination. i will need step by step instructions.

thanks,

bridget

Enter the game's installation folder and look for a file named "dosboxSERPENT_single.conf".
Open it with a text editor and add the word "manimal" just after "serpent.com", like this:
[autoexec]
@echo off
mount C ".."
cls
c:
serpent.com manimal
exit
Save the file. Now you can run the game and access the cheat menu by pressing F2.
If you want to see the ingame usecode eggs as well as use the cheat options, then you can use 'serpent.com manimal s'.

If someone actually has and is using the original Serpent Isle without Silver Seed and finds this thread looking for how to turn on cheats, then just for reference, the original cheat activation was 'serpent.com pass'. The 's' additon works here too.

works like a charm, thanks so much!

would i do the same thing for the black gate? how would i enter the "alt" part?

sorry to be such a pain, but i have never been hugely tech savy.

You can do the same with Black Gate editing the file "dosboxULTIMA7_single.conf" and adding the cheat argument "ABCD" to the executable's line. The hidden character you have to add at the end of the argument can be typed by keeping pressed ALT and ten hitting 255 on the numpad.

Anyway I want to suggest something more radical.
There is a program named which let you run Ultima VII (part 1 and 2) on modern hardware without using DOSBox (the DOS emulator): basically [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_VII:_The_Black_Gate#Compatibility_with_modern_systems_and_fan_projects]it is a recreation of the game's engine.
Cheat mode is enabled by default in Exult and it provides other advantages too, so I strongly suggest you to try it.

Download the latest version of the program from and install it: it will ask for the paths where <i>Black Gate</i> and <i>Serpent Isle</i> are located. This is enough to run both games, but you can enhance them further with sound packs and mods: read [url=http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/how-to-set-up-ultima-vii-in-exult-a-guide-by-jaesun.47447/]this guide for complete instructions.
