I just bought Ultima 7 and was excited to start playing it, except that it's not working on my laptop running windows 8.

When I load the game, dosbox appears with a black screen. It starts in fullscreen but then automatically windows itself, and once I move the mouse it closes itself. This happens both with black gate and serpent isle (in si, the intro plays and then it kills itself).

other dosbox games are working fine, such as master of magic, Tyrain, and a few others.

Any suggestions?

As a note, setting fullscreen=false does not help, it just automatically kills itself.

Have you tried setting different graphic modes? There should be a config tool alongside other shortcuts in Start Menu.
Config tool doesn't work, it keeps erroring with "Game not installed". i'm assuming a win 8 incompatibility with Gog's stuff.

The graphic mode setup tool must be run from the Start Screen. Running it from the installation folder will not work.

If you have unpinned the graphic mode setup tool from the Start Screen do a keyword search or launch it from the all apps view (right click, all apps, or Win+Q).

No, it the config tool has had problems on my XP PC too. You need to edit the .conf file manually using notepad.

Find the line that says "output=x" x being the current setting. Change it to read "output=DDRAW" minus the quotation marks and save. The file is called dosboxULTIMA7.conf and is located where you installed the game. The Serpent Isle conf file is called dosboxSERPENT.conf

Are you running it from the Start Menu? Running it directly will not work by design.

I don't remember. Ever since I've always changed settings without the program.
