The graphics in xu4 look basically the same as the standard game (GOG release). The upgrade patch is what improves the graphics. To use xu4 with the improved graphics you have to have both xu4 AND the upgrade patch.

Normal xu4 - http://xu4.sourceforge.net/images/shot1.png
Xu4 with upgrade patch - http://xu4.sourceforge.net/images/shot2.png

There's basically 4 options when playing this game:

1) Play it normally through GOG with basic graphics and no music.
2) Use the upgrade patch to add low quality music and improved graphics.
3) Use xu4 to play the game using basic graphics but the best music.
4) Use xu4 with the upgrade patch to play the game using the improved graphics and the best music.

Yeah trying if it works with XU4 was the first thing I did today after I saw that Ultima 4 was released for free here. Worked like a charm with the daily snapshot on Windows 7 64 bit. But I only tested if it starts so far and stared at the title screen a bit. And started a game and watched half of the intro. I did not have time to do more testing.
In fact I also didn't have time to post anything about it here until now, otherwise I'd started this topic earlier.
^ Nice well i'll be trying it later tonight then

Kewl! I like it
So could someone who is a bit more computer savvy list a step by step guide to get this working? Downloaded the xu4 exe and the game looked exactly the same, tried to download and run the upgrade patch and it's apparently incompatible with win 7 64 bit :(

Just unzip the files in the Ultima folder, then start up dosbox. There mount the drive and directory in where you installed the game (I.E. mount c d:\games\ultima), in where c is the drive name in dosbox.

After that change to that drive simply by typing c:

There go to the right folder and just run the updater. That enables the better music at least, but the graphic updater seems to be a bit tricker, as AVPATCH seems to be a Windows program and doesn't work for me. But anyways, after setting up the music in Dosbox try to run AVPATCH under Windows to get the better graphics as well.

There is a dos/dosbox build of the avpatch.exe which can be found here.
For me, the upgrade didn't work. Nor for the dos[box] version nor with xu4.

Thankfully xu4 has alternative tilesets which are pretty tasty. Check out Configure/Video Options/Game Graphics Options/Graphics Scheme.

Thanks for the info, both of ye. I was looking for this.
Is this an official or fan patch?

It's a fan patch. Though quite frankly, xu4 works almost as well and is probably easier to set up if you're not used to working with DOS.

Heh, whoops! I did not see this thread when I just posted my last post in another thread all about ux4: Ultima IV Recreated hehehehe

Yeah, I've tried it and it's great!

If you get the Daily Snapshot (and you should, and ONLY the Daily Snapshot, after having the Ultima IV game), you won't need to get the upgrade patch as it's already included within the Snapshot installer.

Just install it into the same folder as your Ultima IV game is in, run the 'ux4.exe', configure as you please from the in-game menu, and then play, and enjoy! hehehehe

Works just great on my Win7 Pro 64-bit w/ SP1! hehehehe

I got it working on Vista 64, it was sort a pain in the ass..

1. I installed the game using the G.O.G. installer
2. I downloaded the Xu4 and the upgrade patch
3. I ran the installer for Xu4 (seperate windows program)
4. I placed the upgrade patch inside my Xu4 folder (keep it zipped)
5. I removed the entire Ultima 4 folder from my Gog games folder ( I placed the folder on my desktop).
6. I opened my Ultima 4 folder, selected all the files from the folder then copied everything into my Xu4 folder. = Joy!

On a side note the C-64 version music is a bit better, but it's a far cry from the pc speaker. I'd like to thank the team for for this new version.

It won't work on the win7x64. Believe me, i've tried it all ways around. Then again, that patch was made in 2001, xu4 already has way better sound and GFX available.
The only thing that i'm missing now is stability [xu4 crashed a few times on me], custom sound packs, and mp3 support for music.

Oh, the upgrade patch has music, but i believe what xu4 offers is a bit more interesting. Try that too. ;)

Nothing can beat the SID chip. ;)
Thanks for this tip about UX4, never heard of it and I'm now enjoying it as we speak. One curiosity I thought I'd ask about though, has anyone been having issues with getting UX4 to stay in full screen? I'm running Vista 64 Bit and when I select full screen mode from the graphics options it goes full screen for a few seconds just fine but then minimizes to the task tray. Every time I try to maximize it UX4 continues to minimize after a few seconds. Not a big deal as I prefer to play in window mode with the reference card and map up anyway but I thought it was strange. Don't have another machine to test it on at the moment but I was just curious if anyone else was having such an issue.
