I have installed U4 from GoG for MacOSX.
I have also downloaded [xu4-MacOSX], read the read.me.MacOSX inside the .dmg
and put the XU4.app where it said to........ STILL the GoG version of U4 has no music.
What am I missing or doing wrong?
I have read thru all the forum questions and I have not seen a single definitive post
on how to get music with the GoG MacOSX app.
Any Mac Users know how you would care to share, please?
thanks in advance !
I think you don't quite know what xu4 even is. It is a new game engine for Ulima IV that completely replaces the original program code of the game. You supply it with the files it needs and throw away whatever you got from GoG. At least that's how it should work, but I couldn't figure out how to use xu4.

Anyway, the reason you don't hear music is simply because the gae has no music. Ultima IV for DOS when it was released had no music, it just wasn't a thing on PCs at that time. There is an upgrade patch 8see the sticky thread) that replaces the tile graphics and adds music, but it's a mod, nothing official.

I played Ultima IV on OS X with the patch. There are basically two way. Wither way you fist need to download Boxer:
http://boxerapp.com
Boxer is kind of like DOSBox on autopilot. It is also what's used for the Mac version from GoG, every time you launch the game you launch a standalone version of Boxer. You can now either take the "gamebox" out of the package and play Ultima IV in plain Boxer (you can then throw away the rest of the package from GoG) or you can just update the gamebox inside the package.

Either way, to get to the gamebox right-click Ulima IV.app -> Show Package Contetns -> [can't remember exact path] -> Ultima IV.boxer
You can see the contetns of the gamebox the same way, that's where you will find the files for ltima IV to run. From this point on you should be able to patch the game and get nice music.

THank you very much! I'll give boxer a try.
I have to ask maybe not you but perhaps GoG why they didn't included music in their boxer package...hmm.
Anyway i'll let you know if i get this to work or not since you have successfully done it on MacOSX.
BTW... did you have music? you said you played with the patch, which patch?
Thanks for your help phish.

jackwebb: I have to ask maybe not you but perhaps GoG why they didn't included music in their boxer package...hmm.
They didn't include music because there is no music to include, the game has always been mute (except for the bleeps). If you were to travel back in time and buy Ultima IV for PC off the shelf it wouldn't have music either. It wasn't until an unofficial patch introduced music from other non-PC versions. You can find a link to the patch and many other useful links in the sticky thread:
http://www.gog.com/forum/ultima_series/ultima_series_ressource_collection

This patch is not included because it's unofficial, GoG never include anything unofficial, unless it is for compatibility.
