I'm still a little confused. I ran the 3.3 patch and it didn't have any options. It just installed and then closed. I believe the 3.3 patch was the "easy" install one, perhaps that's why I didn't see any options?

Is there a config file I can edit to apply the video mode?

Thanks.
Run u3cfgw.exe (in Windows) or u3cfg.exe (inside DOSBox, or if you're using real DOS) to change the configuration.

Thanks, that worked!

Now U3 is freezing the moment I try to move! Aargh... It must be a dosbox issue. I have it running in a separate non-GOG dosbox that I created and it works fine!

You'll also need to change the dosbox cycles setting to about 2000 or greater. GOG defaults to 300 to simulate the 8086 it was originally designed to run on.

I installed, and I can switch between the different graphic styles, but once I load a save and try to move, it just hangs up. I uninstalled and reinstalled, and it's still hung.

I changed my dosbox settings from autpo cycles to 1000 to 5000 to 10000 and it still hangs when I try to walk.

I have the graphics set to the lowest (CGA 4-color)

I played around with the optoins, and it's the sound effects setting. If I set it to unmodified it works fine. Otherwise, it crashes.

Please help whenever try to patch it says: patch cannot be applied! unexpected versions of binaries found
Tried it, and I found two issues with the "Start New Game" option:

1. The number of moves is not reset. That number really *should* be zero at the start of a new game, but instead it retains its previous value.

2. The starting map for the new game is not clean; for example, there is an empty ship to the west of the starting point. (The starting map should have no ships, and I believe there shouldn't be any enemies either.)

I suspect 2 might be fixable by coping the SOSARIA.ULT from a fresh (unpatched) GOG install of the game over SOSARIA0.ULT, but 1 wouldn't be fixable this way.

if you really don't want that ship, I'd use the directory's u3reset.exe in DOSbox window instead of removing a file from the game. might be intentionally placed there. the frustration of acquiring a damned ship in the original version grates at everybody's nerves since 1983 LOL I understand Pirates no longer attack after LB gives you Level 5!

Actually, I'm pretty sure that your level doesn't affect the appearance of pirates in most versions of the game. The only thing unusual about the IBM PC version here is that the encounter rate on the overworld is significantly lower than in other versions. There's also the issue that enemies can be stuck in areas of the map that are not easy to reach, and the number of enemies on the map at once is limited, so a softlock is theoretically possible (though it can be escaped via a glitch).

The whole thing about pirates and level 5 that's sometimes mentioned is a holdover from the NES version; in the NES version (and probably the MSX cartridge version), the enemies that appear on the world map are dependent on your level. At levels 1 and 2, the only enemies that appear are those that can be killed with 0 MP spells (and those spells can be successful multiple times per battle and can be manipulated to not fail completely), making staying at those levels a good strategy for earning money, but pirates don't appear until level 5. This whole mechanic is not present in computer versions of the game.

Anyway, there is a glitch in many computer versions of the game, including the DOS version, that lets you get a ship if the game is refusing to give you one:
0. This glitch relies on the game's auto-save functionality, so if you've disabled it (via the Upgrade mod or some other mod), you will need to enable it. Also, it might help to have a throwaway level 1 character with no armor in the front row.
1. Go into Lord British's castle.
2. There is a ship inside the castle. Board that ship. (If only there were a way to take it out of the castle...)
3. Fire at someone to make the guards come at you. (Watch out, because Lord British will come after you!)
4. Get into a fight while onboard the ship.
5. During the fight, intentionally let one of your characters die. This will trigger the auto-save.
6. Reload the save. You will be on the world map, in the state you were when the auto-save occurred. This means you will have a dead party member (hence why using a throwaway might be a good idea), be on top of Lord British's castle, and will be on a ship. You can now move into the ocean and proceed from there.

good tips
I recall playing the Apple II version and it was a pain, but maybe the guys at Origin Systems Inc(company that owned the game back in those days) must have given me info about level 5 based on the NES version since it released after the Ultima Trilogy(I played it on then) foggy memories of that. I played that a thousand years back! 1989!

I had recalled hearing that somewhere online and forget where. it works on the IBM original version unpatched. thanks! Now I know it all! I had tried it once before, but that was 6 years ago when I first purchased this from GOG. forgot how.
I own a boxed copy of Ultima III: Exodus. I have tried several version of Ultima III and none of them work with the Ultima III Upgrade Patch. Every version I try returns an error message when running U3UP or U3UP3 that mentions an unexpected file size.

It appears this issue has been brought up a number of times on this forum but nobody (including OP) responds to it, or seems to understand that there is indeed a problem.

A real pity as I just played through the original version of the game to completion on stream and was hoping to revisit down the track in 256 VGA.

Any suggestions you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. So I've installed the latest patch and everyting works fine (so far).

I only have ONE burning question...

How do you save and load games in this Mod?

I understand that originally the game auto-saved every time a dungeon, town, castle, etc. was entered or exited.

Is that still the case, or has the mod changed things?

Are there hot-keys to load/save and if so what are they? What does the ALT-R (Restore) do exactly? Is save-corruption possible and are there best practices to avoid corruption?

Thanks in advance!
