Man is this game tough. Whether its finding enough food, or attempting to brave the dungeons. I wonder do levels affect what random encounters you get, I personally find that getting stuff done and then closeing out the game resets enemy encounters back to skeletons and goblins and such low level threats.

You have to steal food from towns and attack the villagers for XP.

You don't HAVE to. It just makes it easier if you do.

I don't think character level affects what encounters you face. But the level of the dungeon you are on does...

Starting characters make a big difference. Starting with a cleric (preferably a Bobbit) with high wisdom and a wizard (Fuzzy) with high intelligence is important. Especially the cleric for the healing spells.
Actually, you CAN'T steal food in Ultima 3. In U1 and U2 you can, but not here. You have to buy it and it's quite expensive.

Levels are not that important, it only affects max HP, you should try to find Ambrosia instead and raise your attributes as much as you can (you "only" need money for this).

I recommend stealing chests from armory merchant in Death Gulch to earn money - you have to find secret passage though and bribe a guard ;)

Good luck with that, I've already finished this game and it wasn't easy.

You *can* steal various things in the villages, though, which you can sell back to the merchants to get money to buy food.
There is a town with no guards west of Castle Britain. You can go there and kill the clerics who barely fight back for easy money and EXP. The biggest pain in Ultima 3 is the high food consumption and the low monster spawning rate, the first part of the game will be spent entirely grinding up money to buy food to grind more money to buy more food. It's like a drug addiction simulator. Another possibility is to create a bunch of dummy characters, take three of them into your part and have them transfer all their food and money to the one main character. Then repeat that for the other dummy characters.

Or look up a few dungeon maps online, find a room that is full of treasure, and keep raiding that room ad nausea.
