I just dl the Ultima 1+2+3 game pack and am disappointed in the graphics for Ultima 3. It seems worse than 1 and 2. Is there a setting I am missing I need to change or are the graphics just that bad. I have seen screenshots online that show much better graphics than what I am getting.

I am running on a Macbook Pro with El Capitan. Attached is a screenshot of what I see.

There exists a fan-made Ultima 3 Upgrade Patch that adds more color and music to the DOS version of Ultima 3 (which is the version GOG distributes).
Ultima 1 looks better because it's a later remake. It originally looked much like Ultima 2.
GeistSR already explained the difference between 1 and 3, but how does that look worse than 2? Those two are very similar graphically.

Turn off that scaler and use 3XNormal instead.

Is this patch a separate dl from the game on gog's site?

I have seen much better graphics in screenshots taken from Ult 3. Is is because it is a different remake? Does your Ult 3 graphics look like my screenshot I attached?

What are you talking about turn off the scaler and use 3xnormal? That means nothing to me.

If the screen shots look like the picture I attached, then it is from the NES version. Otherwise, it might be a mod or something (I don't know).

Most likely comes from this patch: http://exodus.voyd.net/ultima3.html

OK. Judging from your screenshot and everyone's comments, I'll try to clarify this.

- The reason Ultima 3 looks worse than Ultima 1 was because Ultima 1 is the 1986 remake (that was relased the years after Ultima 3). The remake is included because this is the only PC version (the original was only on Apple 2 and Atari 8-bit computers).

- Judging from your screenshot, you have a scaler on DOSBox to smoothen the image. If that's the problem, you can edit the config file to turn it off.

- Again, from your screenshot, your copy of the game is using CGA 4-color graphics, which is the only mode available on the PC version. Most screenshots on the web uses the fan-made patch from here (http://exodus.voyd.net/ultima3.html). I recommend installing it. This patch adds EGA 16 colors and VGA 256 colors graphics, fixes a few bugs, have optional fixes to balance the game (moster generation and food consumption), adds a frame limiter and adds in the soundtrack from the Apple 2 and C64 version. Then, it becomes the definitive edition of the game.

Thanks Geist already suggested using the patch so I will try it and see. Maybe that is the pictures I have seen. I actually played a free demo before I bought the gog version and it looked much better so maybe it already had the patch.

OK I have dl the patch suggested by Geist and Pole but it doesn't seem to change anything. The exe files in the dl folder say they are for windows computers but I am running it on a Mac. Anyway to get it to work so I can enjoy the game?

Try running the patch under DOSBox, or if that doesn't work, WINE.

Is there a tutorial somewhere on how to use dosbox on a mac and how to run the game? I have now dl dosbox but have no idea how to get everything to work to run the patch and then get the game to work with the patch. If I knew there would be so much involved to get the game working I don't know if I would have dl it.
