After I spend a lot of time killing monsters in a particular area, it seems like the supply of monsters becomes exhausted and they only regenerate at a slow rate. This makes it hard to farm for gold, since you have to kill monsters to get gold. I can move to a new area and initially there will be lots of monsters. But soon the supply becomes exhausted in the new area. Does the monster supply eventually regenerate, or are there a finite number in the game?

The low spawn rate of monsters is a common problem with Ultima 2 (and 3). You might have long run out of food till monsters come back. Better to go on. Here are two tips on how to cope with this: , [url=http://www.gog.com/forum/ultima_series/ultima_ii_has_almost_no_monsters/post4]link2

What DeMignon said. One good way to get monsters to spawn without wasting food is to get on a frigate and sail around; the monsters will respawn as you sail around the world, and you can use the cannon to kill them with impunity. Pangaea is a really good place for that, because you can basically park yourself off the west coast and travel in a vertical loop until you have enough monsters to get some decent experience.
Thanks for the advice, folks. I did indeed find that Pangea is the best place to hunt monsters, and commandeering a ship meant that I could kill a lot more with no loss of food, no loss of hitpoints from crossing swamps, and less loss of hitpoints from monsters hitting me. I would also like to find ships to hunt monsters in the Aftermath and in 4000 BC, but have yet to find ships there to commandeer. I am experimenting with delving into a dungeon. The monsters seem to spawn there with great frequency so I can get a lot of gold without traveling too far. The only thing with dungeion delving is going in with lots of torches and watching the number you have left so you can get back out before the torches are all gone.

Be very careful in the dungeons. Even with maxed out stats, I found that I had a snowball's chance in hell of actually hitting the most basic of monsters, and I usually died on the second floor.

Or you can just skip the dungeons. There's nothing in them that you need.
