When I get the rocket in orbit around a planet and press L to land, the rocket immediately drops to the surface and I die as soon as the planet landscape appears. There is no opportunity to steer the ship to a grassy area. I have tri-lithium, ankhs and am wearing the power armor. How can I steer to the grass if the ship hits ground as soon as the ground appears?


Problem solved a day later:
I solved the issue. My mistake was is thinking that I need to steer the ship over the land before it finally touched ground. I thought that there was only a small amount of time to get it over the grassy area before it finally touched down. In reality, the L command merely brings the ship out of orbit and leaves it gliding over the ground without landing, If no other keys are pressed after the L command is given, it will skim over the planet surface indefinitely. Touching a key after the L command is given is what makes it touch down. So, by trying to steer the ship, I was actually making it touch down prematurely and crash into the ocean. What needs to be done is refrain from hitting any keys after the L command is given and let the ship glide over the surface. After some time, it will glide over a grassy area and you can press a key to bring it to ground.
