Default keys are a little weird to me, is there a way to remap them?

The game itself doesn't let you change them (at least as far as I know) but you can override them using the DOSBox Mapper. I haven't used it myself so I can't really help much with how to go about using that.

Note that the mapper will only change what key DOSBox reports to the game; any in-game key information will continue to state the original key mappings.
I agree.

It's kind of weird how it's almost set up for WASD. Way ahead of it's time or did GOG just configure it for us new-style people?

The only odd thing is that "S" doesn't go down, it goes up, same as W.
Try mouse only control, it's a lot more intuitive and fun :D Hold left button and drag mouse to move, drag higher to run. Right click jumps. Swiping the mouse with left button on object automatically uses/talks/whatever the action required. And a simple right click examines. In the inventory, double click item to activate, then left click on target to use (so e.g., double click key, then click door).

I remember, when I played the game, I used the mouse only interface, worked out pretty well. WSAD and other keyboard combos were not any standard back then mouse only was the way to go, and almost all games were designed around the idea. I think in UUW mouse only really is the way to to.
Does the new announced patch for the Witcher 2 which allows remappable keys bring hope of remappable UU Keys ;-)

Not the same as W. W is running, S is walking.
It takes a little time to get used to the control schema. I found myself walking forward when all I wanted to do was taking a step backwards all the time during the first 15 minutes or so. :-)

Interesting how wierd playing a game that has not the todays standard wasd+mouse-schema feels for the first minutes. But then, you'll pretty fast adapt both to the way you "steer" the game as well as the looks of the game once you have passed that entry barrier.

Just wondering, didn't the thief-games have a similar key mapping?

I think you're right, the thief games did have somewhat similar keymapping. As well System shock 1 had the same system (being on a modified engine of this), and I believe System shock 2 defaulted to this setup too.
So, is it possible to remap the keys?

It seems like this would be a nice feature for ALL gog.com games.. most of these games are played by people who have gotten used to all the standardization of the newer games. Standardization that has become standardized because its better and easier to use! I know

Some fans want the OG mapping.. Thats fine! I'm not talking about preventing that... I'm just saying that you should be able to change the mapping if you want to make it more comfortable.

Also, are you able to look up and down in this game? I thought it was the first first person to allow for that, but I cant.

man I hate that I cant walk backwards with S... ;/

1 looks down, 3 looks up and 2 centers your view again.

Did you know that X moves you backwards?
