That the companions made it back from the Serpent Isle isn't so surprising (given the amount of time that they had to do it), but beyond that things do fall apart plot/canon-wise.

Iolo wasn't twisted by Blackthorn, per se - the implication is that, as champions of their respective virtues, the various companions were corrupted by the Guardian's twisting of the virtues via the columns/glyphs. Blackthorn is just acting as his toadie at the time... but his sudden reappearance as a bad guy isn't really properly explained either, especially given the SI reference.

Garran: Time doesn't just fluctuate speed-wise, it also appears to flow in different directions. This is most apparent with Arcadion, who likewise comments on the temporal inconsistencies between worlds/dimensions when you meet him in U8.
Well, the Forest Master in Serpent Isle (who came from Pagan) appears to be a former Zealan, which suggests time flows forwards relative to Serpent Isle.

The Arcadion meeting in U8 never made sense to me and I'm not sure why they did it this way. Either A) he was lying, B) he had amnesia, C) he was a different demon with the same name, D) it involved some form of time travel, E) it involved alternate dimensional realities. None of them make much sense unless it was part of some larger narrative that never got completed.
Story arc, not arch.

Yea, i noticed that after i posted it. good for you!

does it change anything?

SapienChavez: I never played these games back-to-back and never noticed what a mess the overall story is to these games.

i never "saw the forest through the trees" and always assumed these games flowed together.

for example, i played both 8 and 9 on release, with 5+ yrs in between and totally forgot most of the story.

i never read about these games on the internet, but have just started to... seems this is a WELL KNOWN issue and many people were really pissed about part 9.

whats worse, is that part TRIES to bring them all together... theres tha tapestry that tells you the whole story.

seriously, how did the Avatar get from Pagan to Earth?! its no small detail! its a MAJOR and hugely important plot point that was ingored for the sake of a "tutorial?"

and so many other questions... like, why doesnt Shamino age when hes native to Sosaria?

ugh, i give up!

thanks for letting me vent!
It's almost laughable that Hard-core purists put down Ultima IX when earlier Ultima's had hover cars and a space shuttle. I ask you where in the world did they do with the launch pad.
As far as I know, the Ultima IX that we played is not developed by the original people who made the series.

Here is the 'real' original plot of Ultima IX (google Bob White's plot and you will find more info):

This is a 'must read' for everyone who enjoy the Ultima series. Unfortunately, the original designer left and this plot was trashed.

yes, your correct most of the people who worked on Ultima's in the past left by time we got to the, what 4th revision of the game(the game went through quite a few revisions/rebuilds)?, and what they had were a bunch of people who never had a clue about the series but interesting fact here, it was Ultima creator Richard Garriott who had scrapped the plot and the mess we got was mostly his work..

Which was mostly a matter of trying to salvage the unsalvageable. Between the various restrictions on what the game could/couldn't do, the loss of people who understood the series, and the difficulty of changing course on some of the earlier design decisions, producing a proper Ultima would have been nigh-impossible.
Looks like it would have been gold but for having Blackthorn return as a villain, retconning the redemption he is implied to have received in SI. Maybe they could have sold it somehow, I don't know.

But yeah, EA can go crawl off and die for what they did to this series. Hell, I have my issues with some of the games, particularly how progress in U5 feels fairly tedious, but what they did to U9 really makes me fanrage.
