i've been playing ultima 6 for a while now, and I noticed that when you walk around the roads at night, you don't really get attacked very much. not only that, but in savage frontier its the same deal. there just arn't that many enemy's running around. thats a lot differnt from ultima 4 and 5 which is what i'm used to.

I guess you have to go to a dungeon if you want to level up?

Well, on my playthroughs, I always cleaned the shrines and did the various quests I stumbled upon to gain my XP. I'm not sure if there was a dungeon in that game that you didn't have to enter to finish everything.... I also actually tended to get attacked more often, at night, when I had the party resting (with one on watch) than I did just wandering around.
Encounters generally occur at specific locations rather than being the "random encounter spam" method of U1-U5. The type of encounter will vary with the location, and most/all of them will reset after a while. However, they aren't guaranteed to happen when you come across their locations, even when they're "ready".

This is a big change from the previous games, but there's a lot more to the overworld in U6; you'll find yourself doing all kinds of things in it rather than (mostly) just trying to get from point A to point B.
hey i'm not complaining, its a great game, its just a little different then i wanted and expected is all.

I prefer lots of combat from start to finish. good times indeed.

ultima is a little different, but still a lot of fun.

do you guys know if you need to do something special to level up, like talk to lord british?

In Ultima 6 you level up by meditating at the shrines each shrine of virtue will level you up and will raise certain stats by X points

Compassion raises Dexterity by +3
Honor is Dex +1 and Intelligence +1
Honesty is +3 to int,
Humility grants no bonuses on leveling up
Justice +1 to Int.
Sacrifice +1 strength +1 Dex. and +1 Int.
Valor +3 str.

and just in case If you start playing 7 and 7 Part 2(this also applies to Ultima Underworld 2 to a extent) you level up on your own if I recall but you have to find a trainer to raise you stats certain party members will train you and your other companions for free pending they are in your group.

In Ultima Underworld 1 you raise stats by meditating at various Ankh's similar to Ultima 6's Shrines of Virtue.

That list of shrines is off:

Honesty: +3 Int
Compassion: +3 Dex
Valor: +3 Str
Justice: +1 Dex/Int
Sacrifice: +1 Str/Dex
Honor: +1 Str/Int
Spirituality: +1 Str/Dex/Int
Humility: None.

You'll also get +30 health with each level, along with access to higher spell circles and mana (if the character can cast spells - the Avatar can, but not all party members have the ability, and only mage/druid party members have "full" mana development).
