So, I'm playing Ultima VI and I've just liberated all of the shrines from the gargoyles. Before I continue with the quest, I'd like advice on a good place to earn experience in this game, so grinding will be less tedious. If any of you know of a place where you can grind effectively it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Found this:

«If you go down the ladder in Nystul's room, you find the sewers. If you look around the sewers, to the northwest, you'll find another ladder going down into a dungeon. Down there you'll find all sorts of nasties to fight and lots of treasure too. This is a great place to find equipment and gold and experience.

Don't overlook this simple way to make money: When you kill trolls and headlesses, make sure you take any of the following items: Swords, leather armor, plate mail, bows, and spears. You can sell them to the armorer in Britiannia (spears are worth 10 g.p. each).»

One way to level up quickly (without cheating through Iolo) is to kill Dragons. This can be done outside (or inside) the Dungeon of Destard (west and a little north from Trinsic). Against dragons, I found this tactic pretty workable:

Make sure you have the spell "Disable" - a fourth-level spell. (Meaning you need to be level 4 to cast it.) Bring some rings of invisibility and as many wands or other projectile attacks as you can find. Solo mode as the Avatar and go up to the Dragon cave. The moment you see a dragon, put on your ring and then cast Disable on the dragon's central square. It will take Critical damage and you can then kill it at leisure. Each kill nets you 100+ XP.

I also try to let the lower-level party members have a greater chance of killing things (and thus gaining XP) by giving them ranged weapons and setting them to Assault. Everybody else I put to Front or Rear and give them melee weapons only.

I always enjoyed bashing the trolls on the bridge outside of Yew. Easy experience and more importantly money / things to sell for money.

Silver Serpents, found under Sutek's Castle (among other places) are almost as good. They take about the same damage as dragons and give you a little less XP, but they don't shoot back.

(Edited to reflect the correct AI party member command - should read "Assault" to make your party members attack constantly with their missile weapons. A coup;e ways to improve on this:
1. Get 30 Intelligence on the Avatar as soon as possible; this will ensure that her Disable (and Kill) spells always work (assuming the target isn't immune).
2. At 30 Intelligence, using a spell is a good way to finish off an enemy, as spells never miss when you're that smart.
3. Once the Avatar reaches level 7, start using Kill; this will outright kill the enemy instantly, and at 30 Int, always works if the enemy isn't immune. At this point, the only reason to use Disable is if you want somebody else to get the killing blow. Once the Avatar reaches level 8, it is no longer necessary to do this, as she can no longer level up any further; just use Disable and have others finish them off.

One other thing: If you are level 7, you can cast 8th circle spells if you put them into staves with Enchant and then use the staff in question. There's actually an interesting softlock if you have somebody other than the Avatar cast Armageddon while in solo mode for someone other than the Avatar (save first, of course).
