I remember being super excited when Savage Empire was first released. I loved Ultima and this was MORE ULTIMA, what could be better than that? I think I was only 13 or 14 when it came out and I enjoyed it and always remembered it fondly, so I was again super excited when GOG not only added them, but added them for free!
Well, I'm glad I played it again, it was fun, but now I understand why so many people panned it for not really being an Ultima. I wonder what they were thinking, having most of the characters start at level 6? Plus there's virtually no economy, mainly because you can take anything you see. It's just kind of ... simple. I still enjoyed it, but after replaying Ultima VI last year, I'm a bit shocked at the lack of depth of Savage Empire. I wonder if it was a budget issue?
I loaded up Martian Dreams last night just after finishing Savage Empire. Looks like you start at level 4, so that's an improvement. I remember MD having a decent amount of depth in it, but they I remembered SE a bit differently. Any thoughts on MD?
