We're having a display in game museum regarding game glitches/bugs. One of the games I was thinking of putting on display was UU1 and the glitch would be the famous "inventory goes berserk" bug happening usually between levels 4 and 5. This would be in form of a short video.

I've installed the GOG version, but would someone have a save game file that would make demoing the bug faster/easier than playing the game (again) until the level 5 from the beginning? I'd then make a short video regarding the bug.

All help highly appreciated :)

What do you need done in this save? Just have levels 1-4 cleared? Does it matter if most of the game is cleared?
Funnily enough, I was just about to make a new topic:

Has anyone come across a bug like this before?

I was exploring the area near the feral trolls lair on Level 4, when suddenly some items appeared out of mid-air matching some in my pack (couple of potions and some coins), so I thought something weird was going on. I couldn't pick them up, and they were still in my pack, so I just ignored it and carried on.

Later, I have gotten to Level 6 and just started exploring it. I've kept every key I've found across levels 1-5 so far and don't think I've missed any. I've kept them all in the same pouch - but upon loading my game up I've found that all of the keys are gone, replaced with a green bloodstain!

I'm hoping I can rely on the Open spell eventually (I'm playing as a mage) but I'm a little worried about what's going on...is my game ruined?

Olliraa, if you'd like this save game file I can post it to you?

Just been reading around and it seems my only safe option would be to start the game again. Sucks. Maybe time for that Lands of Lore playthrough.

You might still be able to finish the game, but expect that things may get worse over time.

Iirc, as long as you've mostly cleared out levels 1-5, you don't need those keys anymore. Losing the keys themselves isn't a show stopper for completing the game.

Woul you be able to elaborate exactly how things might get worse? Now the bug has reared its head, I can expect items to disappear / alter at random even if I take care not to have too many items on one level? Will it affect items on the floor as well as items I am carrying?

It's a pretty huge bug IMO if you're playing as a low-strength character like a mage - making a stockpile on each level is natural if you can't carry much.

I can't really predict whether it will happen again, but it is one of those things where once you've seen it the first time in a save, then it may happen again. You might go looking in another bag, but find something random.

One fun tidbit though: once of the things that can show up in your bag is Damage. Like, the icon that shows sometimes when you hit something. You can throw it at a monster, and the monster will turn hostile. :D

I think making a stock pile on each level isn't the issue. The issue is trying to stockpile the stuff from multiple levels on one level. If you designate a 'storeroom' for each level, and only store stuff you find on that level in your storeroom, then you shouldn't have this issue.

If you have moved a bunch of stuff from one level and left on the floor in another, then consider reallocating some of that stuff back again. Also, don't nest your bags very much; maybe only put one bag in another bag. There are plenty enough Backpacks and Sacks by level 5 that you shouldn't need to use any of the smaller bags to hold and sort the gear you are carrying.

Ha ha, very meta!

Thanks for your advice Bookwyrm. I have killed the Chaos Knight and unlocked the two doors in his lair (Bullfrog Puzzle - now solved - and the room with various nuggets of gold scattered around that I haven't quite understood yet). I may well try and push through for a finish, see how it goes.

I'm trying to balance between telling you whether or not you'll need stuff, and how much of that might spoil something. For example, I could tell you about the room with various nuggets of gold, but if I do, then you won't be able to figure it out on your own.

I'm pretty sure that none of the keys from levels 1-5 will unlock anything below level 5, so losing them isn't a big deal if you've already (mostly) cleared those levels. I know that you can complete the game without them, and if you want another lock pick, then there are more you can find.
The problem is that UU1 has a list for every level, that contains the items on that level. That list is finite, though and if you bring too many items into a level, that list gets screwed up and that leads to the inventory bug. In UU2 they solved that problem by making non-critical items disappear, when the list is starting to fill up.

I encountered that bug in my first playthrough ages ago, too. Now, that I know the game, I only pick up what I need, rarely create stockpiles and the bug has never bugged me again.

Sounds like a buffer overflow.

I wonder; would it be possible, somehow, to trick the game into executing arbitrary code? Of course, a much easier question to ask is if this bug can cause the game to crash or lock up.

AndrewSFTSN: Thanks for your advice Bookwyrm.
I'd just like to re-iterate this thanks and say I FINISHED THE GAME TODAY.

Just as I was starting to get a little bit bored due to relative ease, Level 7 came up and kicked my mages ass by draining all of my mana. So, I was forced to retreat, level up my axe-fighing technique, clear out areas I'd hitherto overlooked in search of offensive magic items, and then use all of my resources thoughtfully to prevail through its horrendously fiendish network of tunnels and one-way guard posts to crush Tyball's orb and lightning bolt him to shreds. Truly an epic level/game.

I completed UU2 back in the day but this is my first completion of UU1 (my third attempt over the years) and they easily stand side-by-side I would say. What UU1 lacks in terms of polish and quirkiness of UU2's plane-hopping it more than makes up for with its deep, oppressive atmosphere and twisting story structure.

I only spoiled one thing for myself and I suppose it was a big one, which was the precise location of the Cup of Wonder. Felt a little bad, but accomplished everything else more or less under my own steam I think. I was very lucky not to lose any talismans in the inventory bug.

For those wondering about the effects of the bugs - I did encounter a couple of outright freezes on Level 7 and Level 8, where everything froze up. I'd ended up slaughtering my way through all of the guard posts on Level 7, which resulted in a ton of caps, swords, bones and coin piles laying around . Taking my lead from the theories in this thread about large amounts of items I decided to clean up the dungeon a little bit - and once I threw all of these myriad useless items into some lava and eradicated them I only encountered one other crash.

Did you see the solution too, or did you just look up the location?

If you only looked up the location, then see if you can figure out how the player is supposed to figure out the location, and you'll "complete the set", so to speak.
Cheers!

Sadly managed to spoil that for myself at the same time. Still, hopefully I'll forget in time for my next playthrough!

I knew the method for getting the item to materialise - I just didn't realise how you're supposed to figure it out where to do it exactly. It's quite a delightfully convoluted puzzle to solve!

edit: I had experimented with the incense, so had the sections of the code. By that point I already had the cup though, so they didn't work at the ankhs! I was partially working from notes made in an earlier playthrough, and for some reason in those I really stressed the importance of getting the cup early on, which I don't really think it how it's designed to be found.

The incense gives most of the clues. When used, the mantra indicates whether the cup can be found above, below, or on the same level, and it indicates the direction to look. It is just a matter of triangulating where to look.

The name of the cup and the ghoul's talk about Cabirus is the clue on how to acquire the cup once you know the location.

If you want to see what the mantra does, just start a new game and go visit the nearest shrine. I suggest the one near the Silver Tree, since you have at most two fights to get there.

The idea is to show how the bug affects the gameplay, so anything near the end of level 4 should be fine. Provided of course that the bug "works" at least most of the time :)

Olliraa, if you'd like this save game file I can post it to you?
If it would be possible to get that file AndrewSFTSN, it would be super cool :)
