Akalabeth is such a simple game, though, that if it ever does show up on GOG it should be as a freebie, or perhaps include it as an extra with the Ultima I-III package. I'm not at all sure it would be worth paying even the $5.99 price point for as a standalone.
I'm not saying it isn't fun, because it is. Or it can be, if you go into it with expectations in check and remembering the time frame Akalabeth was first released in. It is, however, about the most simple kind of dungeon crawler you can imagine, with very little depth or strategy to it at all. Yes, it's a game of historical significance, but only because of what it led to... the game itself is little more than a curiosity today, I fear.
It'd be nice to have it here, but I just don't want anyone who hasn't played it to get their hopes up unnecessarily, is all.

Meh, screw the DOS ver. It's a not very good after-the-fact slap-together "remake", and not a very good one.
If Good Old Games were to offer Akalabeth: World of Doom (AKA, Ultima Zero), whether for free or for a small amount of money, then I'd hope it would be the original Apple ][ ver.

What exactly did you do to get the game running properly if you didn't use wdosx? That's VERY useful information. :)
EDIT::
I should mention I run Windows 7 or 8 when I use DOSBox, so if you're using a different OS that may have something to do with it, not sure.

Actually, scratch what I said earlier. You don't even need DOSbox. It runs natively in Windows.
The documentation has this to say:
Requirements:
Akalabeth should run on just about any system that supports the VGA
resolution 320x200x256. It does however run in 32 bit protected mode,
so CWSDPMI (provided) must be present, or you must run in while in
Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0, or higher.
I believe the CWSDPMI is similar to your wdosx, but I am running in 32bit XP anyway. There may be some compatibility mode settings that would be helpful in a 64bit OS.

Yes, that's true. AND it's the original version of the game, made by Lord British (Richard Garriott) himself. Whatever multiple(?) DOS vers. or whatever are a conversion of that original Apple ][ ver (furthermore such old conversions were usually re-coded by someone else to be compatible with the platform converted to).
Yeah, I know how to get it work and play it. It's not hard hehehehe
