When I start UFO Aftermath, the monitor goes black but shows a message that says the scan range is invalid or something. It doesn't happen with the other 2 UFO games though.

Anyway, I had exactly the same error with Two Swords 2, but I fixed it by changing the resolution in the registry (I couldn't change it in the game because I couldn't see anything).

But when I looked in the registry for UFO Aftermath, I didn't see any resolution settings. Is there a different way to do this - an INI file perhaps?

Why do they set these weird, incompatible resolutions as the default, anyway? That's crazy!

(Also, why have I lost the button to italicize my text? That's weird.)

Geez, nothing weird or crazy here, game is quite old and it support only 1 resolution - 1024x768.
Check scaling options in your GPU control panel/center, with the option to maintain the aspect ratio.
Oh, is that the res it uses? On Two Swords 2 it was using 2048x1536 (way higher than I can support), so I expected maybe this was a similar problem.

So you think the ratio is getting screwed up somehow? My monitor is a 4x3, and I regularly set it to 1024x768. In fact, I think that's probably the one I use most often, so I'm not sure why there would be a problem.

But I'll see if there's a setting for that. I have a Geforce btw (I don't recall the number - it may be 650 or something).

Sounds like an incompatible refresh rate.
I looked all through my GPU control panel, and there's nowhere to set an option for scaling or aspect ratio. I can set the desktop resolution and refresh rate (mine is 1024x768 60 hz) but that's about it.

The rest of it is about multiple monitors, sideways orientation, 3D displays, color tinting and stuff like that.

I swear I had the exact same problem with Two Worlds 2, and I just had to go into the registry and change the resolution, but I can't find the info in the registry for UFO aftermath to set the resolution.

I also had the problem with Heavy Metal FAKK 2, but it was because I accidentally set the resolution to 1600x1200, which my monitor doesn't support, and I had to uninstall and delete the config file and reinstall! (Oddly, the config file didn't even look like it contained anything about resolution, but that's what fixed it).

Anyway, what else could cause the problem? Are there config or INI files or anything for UFO aftermath, perhaps in a hard to find place, which I could edit manually?

Be aware that quite a few of the GPU control panels only allow you to set scaling modes if you are not using your monitor's native mode. So switch resolutions, and see if the scaling mode appears then.

Now, there should be a config.cfg file in the game's directory, which (I think) also has the resolution options. You may need to run the game once for the file to appear though. You can also try running the game in a window, see here.
Thanks, and running it in a window is a great idea! I'll try these things as soon as I have time to test it.
There seems to be some bug of AMD drivers too (or Windows bug?):
With Win8 i can no longer scale. But I was suddenly able for some weeks not long ago, and it suddenly too desapeareds: I think it comes from updates of Windows or from AMD driver.
