I'm a little worried about getting UFO Aftershock, after hearing some horror stories about there being bugs in the game that destroy system files and uninstall programs running in the background. Is this true? Has anyone here heard of these bugs, or even encountered them? Or might it have something to do with a previous DRM the game had?

The retail version of Aftershock had StarForce DRM, which was notorious for breaking shit. The GOG version is supposedly free of that.

These are only very old rumors, since at least 5 years there was no such reports.
The game has still some bugs (continue patching with 1.3), but is harmless for systems.
