Hi,
I'm quite familiar with most classic sub games like Silent Service 1,2, all Silent Hunter series and even some sub games ported on iOS, but despite of that I consider myself as a casual gamer. I have these questions about the game before I think about buying it:

1)
Once at sea, can I play all the game in 1st person view going around in all parts of the submarine?

2)
Crew Management seems to be the core of this game, but is there a way to 'automate' this and play the game like a classic sub game, with only FEW interactions with the crew?

3)
Campaign: That's what I'm most interested in, this should be the meat of the plate despite crew management. How good is it, is there a free roaming campaign with random encounters, or is it all scripted? How good is the replayability of the same campaign?

Thank you very much to spend your time answering !

Greetings,
XS

Hi,

I think I had the same questions before I bought this game.
I watched some video about it and I felt that this is what I always missed from the old sub sumulators.
So let me answer to your questions.

1.
You can play the game from 1st person if you want, there is even an option to only allow 1st person view, but I don't reccomend using it. If you are in first person view you can only control one officer but you can still give orders to the others. But I think the overview mode helps for example to locate damaged systems, in some cases you have to act very quickly, before your ship sink from a leak.
I have to note that 1st person mode needs to improve because the movment is not perfect at the moment.

2.
Crew managment is the core of the game, but it doesn't mean you have to do it non-stop.
Mostly you just have to assign the officers for a post and they will do there job by themself.
So for example you have an engineer officer on board, you can assing him to be the cheif engineer or the mechanic.
Chief engineer will mantain the diesel motors, or in case submerged he will automatically switch to electric motors.
The mechanic will maintain the torpedoes and in case of damage he will automatically start repairing, even thouh you might need to change the priorities of the reparing list. (I think Chief engineer will start reparing automatically)
So the basic of the game is that you assign officers for a job and he will do it automacally, unless you interact with him.
More interaction is promised from the developers.

3.
There is a promise of a campaign with fully scripted missions, but I am not sure if it will happen, because then they have to add a whole story, which is more difficult then letting the player to create his own story.
At the moment there is a tutorial mission which shows what can be done with the game engine, but the missions are more simple than that.
Mostly you have to go to a specific area of the sea and sink some shipping, but in some cases you get other commands too.
For example you have to transfer a spy to a specific region, and then you need to attack a port for distraction.
Or you have to investigate another U-boot which went missing.

At the moment you can choose a time period when you want to start the campaing, and a home base, then you get your orders and it is all up for the player what to do. (You have to take care of food, fuel, ammo, torpedos and some other equpments on board)

Overall when they add more missions type and more crew interactions (both of them are already promised) then we will get a very good sandbox type game, with high replayability, because the missions and the encounters are all randomised.

At the moment the game is in serious development, and you can see the game is improving in every update they release, I am convinced that we will get a decent game when they are finished.
Hi Fullop,
thank you for your detailed response, I will shortly get the game, I have watched a video where I can see that crew management is not so demanding afterall, and the gameplay is very interesting with the design of these 'power-ups' you get when successful. A new way to play a sub game for sure.
Your description here will also help me to get started.

Hi,

Stay tuned because a new unstable version is already avaliable on steam, probably it will soon arrive for gog too.
Although if you use gog galaxy you might be able to try it there sooner.

NPC uboats become implemented so wolfpack attacks are possible, we will see how it works out but that alone sounds great!
I will wait a little longer for the stable version to arrive.

Stay safe

That's great news in fact. I have followed the 'testing branch' thread at Subsim.com:

This 'SHIFT' management would exactly do what I want I suppose if I get overwhelmed during attacks etc. where I want moe to concentrate on tactics instead of telling my cook to raise morale by preparing a good meal or such... :)
