Not sure if this has to be fixed in the installer/game/launcher or be specified somewhere but the game (or more specifically, the launcher) doesn't run on a 64bit linux distribution without i386 gtk+ libs installed:
./bin/trine1_linux_launcher_32bit: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So...
$ sudo apt-file search libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
