Hi folks, has anyone been able to run the GOG version of TA on Wine? I'm not having too much success here, as I'm getting a "anims/fog.GAF" error upon launching TotalA.exe

Thanks.

It runs fine for me with Wine-1.3.4, after I installed the MSVC++2008 libs via winetricks (winetricks vcrun2008). I use a Nvidia card and no problems so far.

Thank you for the tips, works fine now !
I tried reinstalling, using Wine 1.3.7 and the winetricks library you mentioned but I still get the same error message. Are you running a 32-bit or 64-bit system?

You have too many .hpi files in your TA directory. TA breaks when it tries to read too many. Combine some or rename to .ufo ... and see if this fixes it, as there is no limit on any other extension.

bhxob:
Thanks for looking into this.

I've seen that when searching for a solution. However, I really don't think it applies in this case because the error happens with the basic installation. I think the problem described can happen but only if you mess around with mods...

EDIT: Wow, OK, I guess I was wrong. I tried the workaround that was suggested, rename some .hpi files to .ufo or .cck, just for the heck of it... and TA now starts!

But I still dont understand why it doesn't work "out of the box". Here is my list of files right after installing from setup_total_annihilation.exe :

audiere.dll
Bitmaps
btdata.ccx
btmaps.ccx
BTREADME.DOC
BTREADME.TXT
camps
ccdata.ccx
ccmaps.ccx
ccmiss.ccx
Data
Example.tdf
Example.ufo
gfw_high.ico
goggame.dll
innosetup_license.txt
manual.pdf
mptaext.dll
music
online.dll
readme.doc
readme.txt
rev31.gp3
smackw32.dll
Support.ico
Taccread.doc
Taccread.txt
tactics1.hpi
tactics2.hpi
tactics3.hpi
tactics4.hpi
tactics5.hpi
tactics6.hpi
tactics7.hpi
tactics8.hpi
tadwngox.dll
TAE.EXE
TAE.hlp
TAEread.doc
TAEread.txt
taheatx.dll
takalix.dll
tamplayx.dll
tatenx.dll
tawirepx.dll
totala1.hpi
totala2.hpi
totala3.hpi
totala4.hpi
TotalA.exe
unins000.dat
unins000.exe
unins000.ini
win32.dll
worlds.hpi

Dou you have the same files in there ?

We both have the same files. Except I renamed all the tactics*.hpi files to tactics*.ufo in my Wine install.

I had the problem in Wine also, but not Win 7.

It was a problem that occurred for people who installed all the expansions, like you get with the Commander Pack, which increases the number of .hpi files to the apparent limit.

It was even more rare with the disc version, because if you didn't do a full install several of the .hpi files are read from the disc.

Interesting! I think this might be something worth telling GOG about. They could ship the game with some .HPI files already renamed to .UFO, so that the game could work out of the box for Wine folks.

This is not consitent with what I have experienced. I installed TA using wine 1.4.1 (ubuntu 12.04) and received an error executing TotalA.exe. However, after installing vcrun2008, I was able to run the game with no further modifications.

You are probably running Wine in a different compatibility mode than we were two years ago. Renaming some HPI files to UFO files, which will still be read, will fix the problem on systems where the HPI file limit is still a problem.

I ran into the same problems running multiple GOG games. Used to work, but with the new OS upgrades they would crash on launch. Currently running OSX 10.12.1.

For TA I had to reinstall the game, while for the other game I had I just needed to update Wine.

The following are relevant tips from my tech support interaction from GOG.com:

"You can get Wineskin Winery from here:
http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads

Here is some advice how to update the wrapper and Wine engine:
http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Manual+2.1+Updates
http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Manual+4.5+Advanced+-+Tools"

"Please try changing the version of Wineskin and Wine engine. To do this you will need to install Wineskin Winery from here:
http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php?page=Downloads
Start the application and use it to download additional versions of Wine (by clicking +).
Now you should be able to right click the game's app, select Show Package Contents and run Wineskin.app.
If the Wineskin.app is not there go to Contents > Resources > game, right-click the game's app select Show Package Contents and open Wineskin.app.
In the Advanced options change the engine to the one you have downloaded."

Anyway, upgrading everything seemed to work. TA starts now, just have not had time to really play it...
