Am I missing something here? I just played through Tomb Raider 1, level 2 up to finding the brass idol and silver key. Used the key then got killed by a bear. The game exits to the main menu and all I can do is start a new game. What happened to saving and loading? If I recall the Playstation had blue save crystals, there are none of those in the PC version that I can see and it isn't auto saving either.

I can't be arsed to start, again even if it was just level 2 - I'm not repeating myself.
The PC version of Tomb Raider lets you save anywhere, and there are no save crystals. All you have to do is press escape while you are in-game and use the arrow keys to go to "save game."

There are no auto-saves though so you have to remember to save manually.
XD I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but that is the one feature that I think puts the PC Tomb Raider games WAY ABOVE the console versions. In TR 3 you will start to find crystals in the PC game where save crystals were in the console, only these don't save they just give you a health boost. In TRA and TRL it goes back to save points so enjoy it while it last. :) And yes, if you are fighting the T-Rex and get bored, feel free to save, go get a snack, come back and resume. You can do that here.
Thanks for letting me know. I did look in the menu but couldn't find a save option so assumed there were either checkpoints or those save crystals. I only ever played Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 on the Playstation so I never knew what the PC versions were like, now I know.

In hindsight the save crystals were better than saving anywhere, it was always tense looking for one before something killed Lara (or making the obligatory failed jump). Or seeing one in the distance and working out how to get to it without dying first.

So is this save system the same for Tomb Raider 2 and 3?

It's the same system untill you get to Anniversary or Legend, whichever of those came 1st.
