Okay, for any OS X users out there, here's a (hopefully brief) tutorial on how to get Tomb Raider 1 working with 3Dfx support on DOSBox. For Tomb Raider 2 and 3, follow dudalb's instructions for applying the XP/Vista multipatch here. After that, both games work perfectly with no random crashing and no persistent CD checks.

1) Extract the Tomb Raider 1 install folder from the GOG installer. For simplicity's sake, I'll recommend that you do so by running the installer either in Wineskin or CrossOver.

You should have in the end, in your Tomb Raider 1 folder:

a) A folder named TOMBRAID
b) A file named GAME.GOG and a file named GAME.DAT
c) Nine .mp3 files, with the file names 02.mp3 up to 10.mp3

2) Put GAME.GOG, GAME.DAT and the nine .mp3 files in a folder. Let's call it CD.

3) Download thedoctor45's Mac OS X DOSBox game wrapper with 3Dfx Glide support (Intel-only, 10.5+). The directions for installing games in his wrapper are both on the linked thread and in the included Read Me. In this case, what you're going to put inside the wrapper (in Contents/Resources/) are your CD and TOMBRAID folders. Make sure to put the glide2x.ovl file included with the wrapper into your TOMBRAID folder.

4) Open up the dosbox.conf file in /Contents/Resources and paste the following under the autoexec section at the bottom:

# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
@echo off
cls
# Mount the TOMBRAID directory as the C: drive.
mount c Resources/TOMBRAID/
# Mount the GAME.GOG image file as the TombRaider CD.
imgmount d Resources/CD/game.dat -t iso -fs iso
c:
tomb.exe
And that should be it. Once you test that your game runs successfully you can also follow thedoctor45's instructions on how to further customize your DOSBox wrapper to look and feel more like a native Mac app (e.g changing the icons, etc.).

The only issues that I've seem with the game are:
- improper colour rendering with cutscenes (possibly a bitdepth switching issue)
- no menu or ingame music

That being said, the game otherwise works and plays perfectly. (Special thanks to mrtophat101 for helping me improve and clarify this tutorial.)

Thank you, but your directions are not really clear.

Place the folder with game.gog in the same folder as TOMBRAID?

TOMBRAID is a folder, there are no files called TOMBRAID.

Could you clearify please? :)

Thanks.
EDIT : Nevermind, I got it.

It's asking for a CD though. :(

rampancy: Tomb Raider 2 from the GOG bundle works in CrossOver and according to what I've read on the WineDB it should work in Wineskin too. Tomb Raider 1 was a little more tricky as Boxer currently doesn't have 3Dfx Glide support, and the non-3Dfx version plays very slowly.

Tomb Raider 1: Download thedoctor45's Mac OS X DOSBox game wrapper with 3Dfx Glide support (Intel-only, 10.5+). The directions for installing Tomb Raider in the wrapper are both on the linked thread and in the included Read Me. You also need to place the folder with the GAME.gog file in the same folder as TOMBRAID. Change the GAME.gog filename to GAME.iso, and make this edit at the end of dosbox.conf, under "autoexec":

cls
mount c Resources/TOMBRAID/
imgmount d Resources/game/game.iso -t iso
c:
tomb.exe
avatar
rampancy: "game" was my name for the folder containing the GAME.gog file. The game should run using 3Dfx/OpenGLide accelerated graphics. I currently don't know how (or even if) I can change the game's resolution.

Tomb Raider 2+3: Follow dudalb's instructions for applying the XP/Vista multipatch here. After that, both games work perfectly with no random crashing and no persistent CD checks.
I am PM'ing you, but some PM's seem to be disappearing. So i'll just ask it here.

DosBox is asking for the Tomb Raider cd. I get this error :http://i.imgur.com/xraWh.png

This is the file structure inside the wrapper: http://i.imgur.com/PMLxz.png

Thanks for your PM and thanks in advance for helping. =)

Hmm...the folder structure looks a little different than mine, but it doesn't look like it should be an issue.

What does it have in the autoexec section of your dosbox.conf file?

Thank you for your help so far. :)

It says

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
cls
mount c Resources/TOMBRAID/
imgmount d Resources/game/game.iso -t iso
c:
tomb.exe

Could you post a screenshot of your dosbox wrapper structure? Maybe I can copy that structure. :)
Alright. What follows is an apology, and an excuse.

First of all, an apology to anyone who's tried my earlier short tutorial - it's mostly wrong...my excuse is that I originally tried to play this within Boxer, but that spectacularly failed as the game ran awfully, I suspect due to the lack of 3Dfx support in Boxer. When Boxer imports a DOS game folder into a .gamebox file it shuffles files around to make it "cleaner" on the inside...as a result, my folder structure originally looked different than what other people would likely see. That being said I'm changing my tutorial instructions accordingly.

Okay, that being said...

Heres what you need to do, based on the screenshot of the file structure that you so helpfully posted. :)

1) Delete the GAMEFOLDER folder that's in /Contents/Resources/. It's unnecessary.
2) Rename your "game" folder to "CD" (This is purely a cosmetic/mnemonic step to help the user remember that that folder is going to be mounted by DOSBox as the TombRaider CD.)
3) Rename your "game.iso" file back to GAME.GOG (Yes, this is the original file name... :)
4) Paste this into the bottom of your dosbox.conf file, in the "autoexec" section:

# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
@echo off
cls
# Mount the TOMBRAID directory as the C: drive.
mount c Resources/TOMBRAID/
# Mount the GAME.GOG image file as the TombRaider CD.
imgmount d Resources/CD/game.dat -t iso -fs iso
c:
tomb.exe
Okay. Now THAT should work! If it doesn't, PM me your email address and I'll send you my dosbox.conf file for you to use, and I'll post a screenshot of my folder structure for you to look at.

Make sure that the "CD" folder (formerly your "game" folder) is in Contents/Resources, not /Contents/Resources/TOMBRAID.

Just noticed I might have done something wrong in the file structure.

I'll restore it and report back. :)

EDIT : DosBox hates me. :D

It mounts the CD and loads it. Sadly, now it's says: FATAL ERROR: unable to load DDL.

Oh, I think that's DOSBox complaining that it can't load the 3Dfx Glide library. Did you remember to put the included glide2x.ovl file from the wrapper .dmg in your TOMBRAID folder?

I did yes. :)

I am going to do a complete restart. Going to re-install everything. Might just be a hiccup from all the trial and error we've been doing.

I shall report back! ;)

EDIT: Did a complete re-install. Getting the same DDL error. Weird....

EDIT 2: It's working now. glide2x.ovl file needs to go inside the TOMBRAID folder.

Thanks for all your help my friend! :D

Okay, I wonder if it's because the originally included 3Dfx/OpenGLide DOSBox libraries bundled with the game are interfering with the new glide2x.ovl file included with the OS X DOSBox wrapper.

Try to delete any of the extraneous stuff in your TOMBRAID folder; as an example, here is a screenshot of the contents of my TOMBRAID folder: http://www.flickr.com/photos/92845326@N00/7345574778 (The SAVEGAME.x files are saved games from my own playthrough.)

Oh, I see, you probably were putting it in /Contents/Resources/. I'm glad we finally got the blasted thing to work!!!!

Got it to work mate. :)

The website with the tutorial hints that you have to replace the original glide2x.ovl with their glide2x.ovl.

The original glide2x.ovl is not inside the TOMBRAID folder though. That's where the confusion was.

So you have to delete the original glide2x.ovl and place the new glide2x.ovl inside the TOMBRAID folder.

Ah, I understand. I believe the reason why it was written:

Place the included glide2x.ovl driver into the gamefolder, overwriting any existing file
...was because some other DOS games that ran on 3Dfx did contain such files. Oh well. We got it to work! Enjoy your date with Lara! :)
Hi, I'm trying to follow your instructions and think I've done everything correctly, but the application package always crashes after the Eidos intro screen is displayed. Any thoughts?
